Australia : Student, 12, dies of stab wounds

Student, 12, dies of stab wounds
    Sarah Elks
    February 15, 2010

A 12-year-old boy has died after allegedly being stabbed by a teenage classmate in Brisbane this morning.

A police spokeswoman said the incident happened about 8.15 at St Patrick's College in Shorncliffe - a private Catholic boys' school - where both boys were students.

A 13-year-old is assisting police with their inquiries, while he recovers in a nearby hospital from minor wounds.

The 12-year-old is understood to have been stabbed in the chest.

He was rushed to Brisbane's Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

A police spokeswoman said investigators were still trying to confirm the exact location of the stabbing and further details about the incident.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that two male students from St Patrick's College, Park Parade, Shorncliffe were involved in an altercation at the school around 8.15am,” police said in a statement.

    That is a fact.
And I see no reason that knives are so readily available to children or anyone for that matter in Australia.
There needs to be a more strict control of dangerous weapons in country's where there are known violent people that will do harm to others, even children it seems.
Terrible to have to live in a country where even children in schools are at risk of such things.

Do they happen to have fine, strong Lebanese names by any chance?

Prolly not up that way, quite sad that this isn't major news, what with it happening virtually every week in London nowadays.

ironically , this upsurge in violence by children has come during a period of diminishing corporal punishment.

I say beat the liitle cnuts more often and see if the violence decreases

Sorry, but a 13 year old boy stabbing a 12 year old boy to death in a schoolyard is not a freak incident... More a sign of the times...

agreed, with the stupid bastards that insist we cannot give a child /adolescent a hit to bring to their attention the error of their ways, the world now turns down the road of violent non reality puter games, and the kids hit the streets with loose morals and respect for their peers, i know its the same old story 'a good kick up the arse never hurt me as a kid' well maybe just maybe those kick up the arses what was required to install a bit of reality checking when you stepped over the line, and that line these days has certainly been blurred by this politically correct bullshit..and unfortunately a kid has died and another has lost his life to the system..2 families destroyed by something that could have been solved perhaps by a kick in the arse

This a very real indictment on Australia today , without offence intended, Benorexic is like so many Australians who want to bury their heads in the sand and believe it never happened.
The blame is not the children but the parents who themselves know no better and have no idea of respect for others , are contemptuous of authority and teach their kids the same.
We are now in our third generation of anti socialists and the solution is only to be found in a Draconian turnaround that will never happen because of the whimps we elect to represent us.
I feel safer friday night in BKK than I do in Surfers Paradise at night and now it seems Melbourne is intent on becoming the most violent gang controlled capital of Australia.
Where I live on the Gold Coast we have 5 juvenile gangs running riot to the point where a man I knew, in a final desparate act to draw attention to his plight and the plight of other neighbours, blew his brains out on the front lawn of the gang leaders parents home.
He was persecuted relentlessly for over 2 years by this gang , but of course the Police could do nothing withot proof and had no resources for undercover surveillance ? - 2 hours after his death 2 members of this gang where on his drive way "high fiving " each other. Police deny formally that there is a gang problem in the area?

Police probe porn on Facebook tribute page
    February 16, 2010

POLICE have vowed to hunt down and charge whoever posted child pornography on online tribute pages for slain schoolboy Elliot Fletcher.

Queensland's top police officers said they were sickened by the postings on Facebook, which included images of child sexual abuse, bestiality and torture.

The images caused deep distress to 12-year-old Elliot's family, already struggling to cope with his stabbing death at St Patrick's College in Brisbane yesterday.

The offensive material, posted in the hours after the boy's death, was removed from Facebook after police took action overnight.

Officers say they'll do everything possible to trace and prosecute the culprit, or culprits, who could face 10 years in jail in Australia for posting child pornography online.

If it's determined the material was posted overseas, authorities in Australia will work with that country to ensure those responsible are caught.

"It's some of the most disgusting and unacceptable behaviour that you can ever imagine," Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said in Brisbane today.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon praised Facebook's Australian representatives, saying they acted quickly to help get the material removed.

"The material on the site is classed as child exploitation material," he said.

"It's some of the most disgusting material I've seen in a lot of years.

"Offences relating to that sort of material carry a 10-year sentence from the state perspective, and 10 years from the Commonwealth perspective."

Janine Edwards, whose son is in grade 12 at St Patrick's, said she was sickened by the offensive material posted online.

"There was an awful lot of things on Facebook last night. There's just so many sick people that write such disgusting things," Ms Edwards said, as she attended a mass for Elliot at the school.

Another Brisbane mother told ABC Radio she and her 12-year-old son were posting their respects when a user pretending to be the dead boy said it was all a hoax.

"The one that upset me the most was a Facebook user by the name of the boy who died, with a photo of his face that's been in media, popped up saying, 'Hi, I was just joking,'" the woman said. "It really shocked me."

Family of murder accused schoolboy calls for media restraint
    February 16, 2010

    The Daily Telegraph

THE family of a 13-year-old boy charged over the murder of a fellow student has called for restraint in media reporting on the case.
Twelve-year-old Elliot Fletcher died after being stabbed in the schoolgrounds of St Patrick's College in northern Brisbane yesterday morning.

Lawyers for a 13-year-old boy charged with murder made no application for bail and he was remanded in custody to re-appear in court on April 29.

Louisa Pink, spokeswoman for lawyers Robertson O'Gorman, read a statement from the family outside the Brisbane Children's Court today.

"It is extremely tragic circumstances in which a young boy has died. However, there is also a young boy who is now facing the criminal justice system on a very serious charge," she said.

"Current speculation in the media as to the motives and the circumstances are, frankly, unfair to him and we are just asking that the media exercise restraint and report responsibly on the matter."

Students, parents and friends visited St Patrick's College this morning to remember Elliot.

School board chairman Damian Gallagher said the school was still coming to terms with what had happened.

"It's still very raw for us and this is a very special moment for the community," he said.

Elliot, who was stabbed in the chest, died just minutes after arriving at hospital.

Nearly 3200 people joined the "RIP Elliot Fletcher" Facebook page which was set up following the shocking incident.

"So young. So many opportunities you missed. But you're in a better place now. I'll see you up there mate," wrote Jacob Dare, one of hundreds of heartfelt messages from shocked friends.

But around midnight last night, sick photos began appearing on the page, showing distressing scenes of murder, race-hate, bestiality and callous messages.

Principal Dr Michael Carroll, who delivered the news of Elliot's death to the students, said it was a "tragic loss of a young life".

    Lockdown

The school went into lockdown at around 8.15am (9.15am AEDT) after the stabbing happened in a toilet block.

Advance Australia Fair blared out from loudspeakers around the grounds as students arrived for morning tutorial groups. The national anthem doubles as the school's lockdown alert song.

Boys hid under desks in classrooms as ambulance officers desperately tried to keep Elliot alive and police searched for his alleged attacker.

"You can't imagine what it would be like to send your 12-year-old boy to school for him never to return," said Police Chief Supt Les Hopkins. "It is distressing and shocking."

Dhana Monks said her son was devastated to lose his friend. "When you send them to school you think they're going to be safe," she said.

Counselling is being offered to students and staff.

Assuming you are not just trying to take the piss I will try and explain seriously what I mean .
Australia now has 3 generations descending from parents who did the flower power anti tradition, anti everything thing of the 60's , 2 generations further down the track we now have teenagers and young adults who have no understanding of socially acceptable behaviour , respect for property , respect for the elderly and who treat the law and the police with contempt because their parents have no concept of courtesy , consideration, respect or fear of the law , therefore the product of the union have nothing to guide them and the result is continueing chaos.

It's the 'Draconian turnaround' idea that I find abhorrent. mixed with the anti socialist stuff, you sound like you want a military dictatorship installed, no doubt to 'teach all them hippies values or something'.

    I dont agree.
