Vancouver; Winter Olympics Air-lifting Snow in Due to Record High Temperatures

I'd like to remark, the term " global warming" is misleading and lends false argument to those in denial of the phenomenon when they witness record cold or other climate abnormalities.

" Polar " warming is more accurate as that is the true cause of global climate change, the gulf stream shutting down, etc., etc..

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >

After warmest January in history, Vancouver airlifts in snow for Winter Olympics.

Record warmth is forcing the organizers of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia to helicopter in snow to cover mountains. The planet’s changing climate is threatening the start of the Olympics, as “sloppy, foggy weather” has canceled training runs on both Whistler and Cypress Mountains. In Vancouver, the “average temperature in January was 44.9 degrees, besting the previous warm record of 43.3 in 2006 and well above the historic average of 37.9 degrees”:
After the warmest January in Vancouver history, organizers moved more than 5,000 cubic meters of snow onto Cypress by helicopter and truck from nearby mountains. Some 750 workers are bringing in snow and building courses before competition starts on Saturday.
Vancouver’s troubles are part of a broader trend of warmer winters across the Northern Hemisphere. Increased warmth and changing weather patterns have led to glacial retreat and unreliable snowfall across the globe, putting the future of alpine sports in jeopardy. Globally, we are in the warmest winter on record. Locally, the weather forecast for the Olympics “calls for more rain and warm temperatures for the next five days.”

    Last Year???

Warming trend over the last few decades in British Columbia. Last winter was what we canucks call a Jim Dandy, cold and long. Nov last year, many cold records were broken. Whistler/blackomb both opened early with 35 percent of their annual snow already accounted for. Global warming????

Snow is created by increasing moisture caused by warming temps. Takes a couple of generations for it to kick in.....

They should bring back Winter games in the mountains, not near the see. We have plenty of snow and sun in the Alps.

This is a joke organising Winter games in Vancouver.

Yes, and especially during an El Nino year, when things are going to be naturally fucked up.

Whisler /Blackcomb are side by side. Blackcomb has a vertical mile VERTICAL!! of serviced skiable terain locatated approximatly 60 klicks from the ocean/pacific. there is sking on the whisler/horse shoe glacier for usually 10-11 months. Warm summer this year when we were there, closed in August.

There are mountains in British Columbia. the ski mountains visible from the city of Vancouver number 4 and ussually open mid November/early december through april. Sea to sky, golf, fish, ski and surf in the same day if you have enough energy!

As I said, Winter Olympics belongs to the mountain area. Near Vancouver it's barely hills, at least it's what we call it in Switzerland. Her the ski resorts are usually from 1500m to 3500m. Fifty of the mountains exceed 4,000 m with more than 30 ski resorts. Ski Holidays Valais - Ski Resorts Valais - Skiing Valais - Ski Valais

Sion, in my canton was candidate for this Winter Olympics, it's right in the middle of the Alps and we have meters of snow. Actually our problem is not importing snow by helicopter, we have up to 200cm snow in some ski resorts.

Look at the average temp in Vancouver in February: Average high: 8° C Average low: 0,5° C. Absolutely no garanty of snow.

I don't say that North-America doesn't have suitable place for this event. But it's surely not Vancouver.

^ Why not Such a beautiful place

We have already hosted World Cup alpine skiing events who were canceled in another country due to bad snow conditions. We have the skills and the people who would work night and day to host such an event.

Screw the Olympics, it's treated like a governmental agency or a charity but it's really nothing more than a profit making business.

    I agree with that..

Canadians didn't need them anyway, they live next door to the greatest nation that has ever graced the surface of the earth.

Gee, pity about that Georgian luge athlete that died. Guess the slope wasn't good enough?

Cypress Mtn is the key prob area for lack of snow right now. And, people have been skiing and snowboarding, etc, on these mtns for years. Sure, not as high as the Canadian Rockies, but the runs are more than good enough.

It has been said that the run is too fast.
But it seems to me that speed sports thrive on speed, and if you can not qualify as an expert then you should stay off the faster places.
All speed sports seem to be about danger and speed.
So if you can not stand the heat, then stay out of the kitchen.
I know for myself, I would not have chanced it, as I have refused to do some things in my life that I had considered to dangerous for me,, so he should have said the same thing,, others have made the run and lived,, so he was not up to par for that course.

Bike racers walk away from higher speed crashes than that all the time. Putting honking great unprotected steel pillars just a few feet from the exit to a very fast turn seems like a very bad idea to me.

There should be a "landing area" of some sort for the racers that lose it on a corner like that not steel pillars guaranteed to cause instant 'deceleration sickness'.

Luge track is not concerned about the climate, it's an artificial track like skating rinks. No problem building such a track on a small hill. The same for bobsleigh.

But all alpine skiing disciplines need strong icy snow. You cannot race on a track with 3 different quality of snow, it must be strong from the top to the bottom. Especially downhill where they are going up to 140 km/H.

And till now all of the practices had to be rescheduled due to bad condition. Snowing on the top and raining on the middle and bottom.

He would have been OK had he stayed on the track, same with a Mocycle racer going down, as long as he stays on the track or on the ground area, but if he comes off close to a wall in a turn and smacks the wall, he to is fucked.
Also I saw one not to long back that went down on a turn and as he jumped up andothe machine center punched him and killed him dead as hell,
so shit happens when in competition.

so to stay safe,, stay home and watch it on TV.

True, but if he (bike rider or luge rider) skips off the course they should have a place to slow down, it shouldn't mean a f*cking giant metal pole is the stopping mechanism.

He's already screwed up his run down the track, the death penalty is a tad extreme in my humble opinion..

He should have listened to the dude that said "if you do not get lined up right in turn #9 then you are in trouble in the next turns because you are going to fast to be in control, so I do not know how you would slow one down, I don't think they have brakes, and his asshole seemed to have lost suction as he came off that TV tray he was setting on and done a half turn before coming into contact with that steel pole, and from the PONG sound it seems like a light gage metal.
But Lifes a bitch and shit does happen.

No, take the term " warming" away.
It is a denier's red herring, misinformation propagation such as ^ ..

    The poles are melting resulting in climate change;

More extremes, shifting and disruption of patterns.

Bad news for some folk, other regions might benefit, in fact Canadian govt is of the opinion it will enjoy longer agriculture seasons and profit from de-iced shipping lanes.

(for the first couple of decades anyway..?)

I believe most are not denying global warming. Most however, are denying that man is the ultimate cause of a natural event that has been going on before the time of man.

You my friend are the one in denial!
You bullied, you laughed, you lied, you lost!
