New Pint Glasses To Cut Booze-Fuelled Attacks

Safer pint glasses are set to be introduced in British pubs to reduce the injuries caused by nearly 87,000 glass attacks each year.


The Home Office is unveiling two prototypes that are designed not to shatter into loose and dangerous shards.

Liam Sharratt, 27, was hit in the face with a glass while out drinking with friends in a Manchester bar in November 2007.

He remembers little of the attack which left him with a 9cm wound on his right cheek.

Mr Sharratt told Sky News: "I had a cut all the way down and also through my cheek, almost through to the inside of my mouth. The surgeon said I was going to be scarred for life.



"You go out for a drink with friends and an hour later someone is telling you that you'll be scarred for life. In that second my life changed... all because of a glass."

Violent incidents involving glasses and bottles cost an estimated £100m in NHS, police and court costs each year.

Attempts to replace traditional pint glasses with plastic proved unpopular with drinkers.

The new designs feature high-tech ways of using glass and will be piloted in pub and bars within months.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: "While this is never going to be the only answer to preventing violence, it is an important step forward which could also provide retailers with a preferable alternative to plastic glasses."

I thought the right to bear a pint glass was in our constitution.

What about people who drink bottles of lager Don't they cause problems

In major town centres club and bars, alot of bottles are plastic these days

87000 cases of glassing a year!? Holy crap, that's a lot.
Hopefully that number will be decreased by bringing in these new pints.
But yes, bottles will still be a problem and I presume the mindless yobs will find other ways to scar people for life.

Why don't they just give everybody guns. That will cut down on glassing attacks.

Strikes me as being a bit ambulance at the bottom of the cliffish this does.

One of the reasons I've always said England has a violent society, especially in the pubs, only to be told that in Bangkok I shouldn't drink with Thai men because they are the most violent drinkers on the planet.

I've got a pool cue scar on my cheek given to me by some twat who was a bad looser.

And a mate of mine glassed himself once when he was about to get beaten up by a load of bikers in a bar in Leeds. He smashed a glass over his head and shouted "Are you sure you wanna fuck with me!!" Did the trick, they thought he was a right nutter.

..superb ..

I suppose it is quite easy, whilst seeing red, to smash your glass over the antagoniser's head..so, probably a good thing to replace them..having said that, pondlife are not easily thwarted, so the pubs should expect an influx of bulky rings and steel toecaps on their punters..

Nevermind, let them get on with it..there are safe places to go for a quiet drink all over the country.

lotsa glassings here in ozzie too, about 15 years ago i seen a chick smash a schooner glass in a blokes face, peeled his cheek clean to the teeth, i seen a lot but that one was right up there, funny thing is in all the years of growing up and fighting and shit it never occured to smash a glass in some pricks face, i would,nt want to spill me beer, kick em in the nuts, kneecaps all the rest no problems, and fuck it i,m not gonna enjoy drinking out of a plastic tumbler because of these fuckwits

I was in Darwin and I beat some drunk Aussie twat at pool. He went apeshit and 2 nice bouncers picked him up and carried him to the door.

With the amount of Poms in Darwin, you'd think he'd be used to losing at pool.
