Three-quarters of Britons 'suffer from depression'

Three-quarters of Britons 'suffer from depression'

Three out of four people in the UK suffer from depression at some point but only a third seek help, according to a new poll.

    Published: 7:30AM GMT 01 Feb 2010

Women are more likely to feel depressed than men, with 80% saying they regularly or occasionally feel down or unable to cope.
Money is the biggest cause of depression, with more than half of all people surveyed saying they have felt down about money over the last 12 months.

Men are particularly likely to have linked their depression to the recession, whereas women have been worried about family or relationships.
January is regarded as the most depressing month of the year, caused by post-Christmas credit card bills and cold weather.
Zelda Peters, director for mental health at the charity Turning Point, said even mild depression needs to be identified and treated early.
''We know that, if diagnosed early, mild depression can be successfully treated.
''If not, it can escalate and lead to unemployment or long-term sickness, and even to negative behaviours such as drinking more, missing work or college and lying to family and friends.
''Most people think anti-depressants are the answer and for some people they are.
''But there are a huge range of treatments beyond this on offer, such as psychological therapies which provide effective long-term relief.''

Plenty to be depressed about, weather, economy , football, weather ,economy, unemployment, weather etc etc.

Most the Brits I know here are as happy as Larry!

Now if you take a Brit like Smeg for example,.........well just read his posts filled with denials and god help the overall community in general.

No depression with me. I'm just sitting here in the Emirates lounge at Manchester Airport, quaffing champagne and looking forward to a damn good two month holiday

Yeah, but just remember that for every one of you there is some poor soul sat at Suvarnabhumi staring into the bottom of his beer glass wondering "Where the hell did the last two months go?"

Then there's the person on Wimbledon Common station counting up the months to his two week holiday in Benidorm.

Then there's the bottom feeder clocking on for his twelve hour shift stacking shelves at ASDAs, who hasn't a clue where Thailand is, wondering how he came to wake up Sunday morning in a police cell.

So there you have it 75%.

these stories are beloved by expats who burnt their bridges and cant return home because they dont have the money any more , so they like slagging off their old homes just to justify their move .when they have to struggle with nutty thais in their old age ,jumping thru hoops to get their annual visa ,and can look forward to no healthcare when they develop cancer or heart disease or need expensive treatment which they cant afford in LOS they might change their tune . dont forget to top up your insurance for the Altzheimers care when you reach 75+ and cant wipe your arse without assistance .

That figure may be higher today, as it now includes all Arsenal supporters.

Bangyai, any source info....like who conducted the poll? I get a little cynical about such headlines...as they are often conducted by the very people looking to benefit from them.

Also describing someone as depressed can be quite a serious diagnosis. Feeling down because shit is happening in your life isn't depression.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

75% of blah, blah, blah. These polls are pointless as the take stats and apply them to the whole country when they survey in the region of a thousand people.
Must have done it in London where all the grumpy unfriendly people live

    Fixed that.

If 3 out of 4 people there suffer from depression, does the other 1 enjoy it?

One small thing is that most of the lads I know here in PTY are happy , well balanced and have made good provision for the future as I have .
There will be 'casualties' in any resort and unfortunately they are all too visible but are not the norm .

The Telegraphs ace reporter asked 4 blokes down the pub at lunchtime. 3 of 'em didn't have enough to get the next round in.
