special arrangements put in place to make the proceedings less intimidating

A court was told the victims - then aged nine and 11 - were lured from a recreation ground in Edlington, South Yorkshire, by the brothers, who were 10 and 11 at the time of the attack.
The denied a more serious charge of attempted murder but the prosecution accepted their pleas and said there would be no trial.

As well as the central charges of GBH with intent, each of the brothers pleaded guilty to robbing one of the boys of a mobile phone and the other of cash.
They admitted two counts of intentionally causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
The brothers, who are now aged 11 and 12, are appearing before Mr Justice Keith, who is beginning a sentencing exercise which is expected to finish on Friday.
Nicholas Campbell QC, told Sheffield Crown Court the brothers took hold of their victims and dragged them through a gap in a fence, while threatening to kill them.
The barrister said: "The brothers continued the threats, this time saying 'We're gonna kill you and we're gonna kill the rest of your family if you don't shut up'."
During the attack, the older brother focused his attention on the older victim, while the younger brother targeted the younger of the two boys.
Mr Campbell said: "But the prosecution say that they were acting as a team from the beginning to the end, lending support and encouraging one another in their plan."
As details of the attacks were read to the court, the boys sat at the back of the courtroom, flanked by care workers and watched by members of the victims' families from the public gallery.
The elder of the two boys wore a dark suit and tie with a white shirt, while the younger wore a blue shirt and tie.
The judge and barristers appeared in court without gowns or wigs as part of special arrangements put in place to make the proceedings less intimidating for the two defendants.
Mr Campbell said the victims, who are uncle and nephew, were subjected to an assault which was "both physically painful and emotionally traumatic - it was frightening".
"In addition, what they endured was humiliating and embarrassing."
He said the boys set out on Saturday April 4 with their BMX bikes and their dog.
The brothers, whom they had met before, asked to use their bikes.
They then asked their victims if they wanted to go and see a dead fox.
Mr Campbell said: "Once concealed in the trees, the brothers told (the boys) that they were going to kill them."
When the intimidated boys asked why, the prosecutor said, they were told it was because they had led the brothers' grandmother to have a heart attack and die.
Mr Campbell said this was, of course, not true.
The court heard that the boys were taken to an area concealed from passers-by by vegetation and a large pile of broken branches, which had been loosely constructed to form a den.
As they were being taken down a slope to the area, the older victim became stuck on barbed wire, which cut into his shoulder. The younger boy was later pushed up against the wire, which was used again later in the attack.
Mr Campbell said the attack became more serious as both the victims were put to the ground at the bottom of the slope and both boys were stamped on.
The brothers collected bricks and stones, which were thrown at the heads of the two boys.
Mr Campbell said: "Some were too heavy for such children as (the brothers) to throw and they were lifted and carried to and dropped on to (the victims)."
Broken tree branches were used to strike the boys and the younger of the two victims received a deep wound to his forearm arm from the use of the sharpened end of a stick.
The judge heard that police later found a series of blood-stained "weapons" at the scene.
These were displayed in the courtroom by a police officer.
They included a wooden branch, a wooden stick, a piece of wood, another wooden stick, a brick and three stones.
Mr Campbell said the older brother used the younger boy's mobile phone to film his sibling attacking the older boy.
The barrister warned the court that the footage was "upsetting to view" before it was played.
Their tormentors also tried to force the boys into performing sex acts on each other.
The court heard that the brothers were at pains not to get any blood on their clothing, telling the boys: "If the blood goes on me, we're gonna kill you both."
The boys were then moved to a more secluded area, where the attack continued.
The boys were taken to the bottom of a ravine where there was little chance of anyone else seeing what was happening.
Both brothers used part of a clothes line in an attempt to strangle the younger boy by winding it around his neck three times and pulling it tight.
Mr Campbell said: "(The younger boy) remembers his voice and his eyes feeling rather odd. (The older brother) asked 'Are you dying now?' and then he stopped. He went on to say 'It's too much with the wire. They're not dying at all."'
After the older boy had been struck, the younger brother said they had to go to meet their father.
Mr Campbell said: "(The older brother) replied 'One minute. I need to kill them both because they might just grass on us'."
The older brother armed himself with two small rocks and threw one at the older boy, who was blinded by blood and swelling to his eyes, and one at the younger.
They then left, telling the two boys to stay where they were or they would "come back and finish you off".
Bizarre to think that the judge needs to appear less intimidating to the defendents who tormented and intimidated kids

Just kids having fun again...dont you just have to laugh! Boys will be boys!

What a mess, what a mess of a family, what a pair of messed up lives, it reminds me of the Jamie Bulger Murder...these people need a fucking bullet through the skull, their genes need to be prevented from continuing...sorry, I am not PC at all. But lets face it, if these two shits are simply shot...end of story, no need for all the expense of taking "CARE" of them, supervising them...better GONE!

And... sterilize the entire family that contributes to the gene pool of shit too!

And, have a think, before we get the usual suspects, posting shit like "WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR KID" Well it wouldnt be my kid, because I would do the dirty work myself.

But I dont need to worry about my kids, they are loved and taken care of...these fucking creatures and their entire family need to be erased from planet Earth.

    Nothing but SHIT!

Maybe it wasn't for the defendants' benefit, but rather to improve the chances of them opening up a little more during the trial.

Not PC, but agree, some folks shouldn't be allowed to breed. I just bet the parents of these 2 kids are totally retarded scum. They probably had no chance from the get go.

When I look back to sadder times in my life, I was forced to go to places lke Wombwell in Yorkshire, and sadly have to stay there overnight, what a terrible place, what a terrible county, a terrible region and it appears to be a terrible country.

When we were kids we had Mary Bell, not far from us, they made a terrible example of her, and ruined her life, just a kid.

Now there all these social workers (depressed drug addicts with no morality) who "take care of the needy (or take care of their pay cheques for doing fucking NOTHING)

I read a story recently where a whole family of kids in BIRMINGHAM... NOT Fucking BOTSWANA, were STARVED, until one of them DIED, a little girl of 8!

An 8 year old girl STARVED TO DEATH IN THE SECOND BIGGEST CITY IN THE UK!!!!

    and nobody did a thing?

    Where was the School?

Where were these fucking low life social workers,

Where was the Doctor...on his bottle of Gin?

Why are these people constantly given jobs and salaries for FAILURE!

They should be jailed for negligence.

Oh , and by the way the little girl was a NEGRO, just in case you thought I was being a bit racist..these fuckers from the government should be made to pay for this, and number one in the GUILTY SEAT should be their disgusting inhuman parents.

The UK needs to introduce STONING for SHIT like this, they are not fit to be put in a prison with "CRIMINALS" These people should be wiped from the face of the Earth!

I met a couple (2) social workers in my previous life, and to be quite honest, I would not have trusted them to take care of a pet hamster let alone a child!

Torture boys jailed for sadistic attack

Posted 1 hour 59 minutes ago
Two young brothers have been jailed for at least five years for a "sadistic" attack on a pair of fellow youngsters that shocked Britain and fuelled a political row.
The brothers, aged 11 and 12, were convicted of torturing and assaulting a nine-year-old and an 11-year-old boy in the south Yorkshire town of Edlington in northern England last April.
The court heard harrowing details of how the pair lured their victims to a secluded spot before forcing them to strip and sexually abuse each other, attacking them with bricks, strangling them, and making them eat nettles.
"The fact is this was prolonged, sadistic violence for no reason other than that you got a real kick out of hurting and humiliating them," said the judge, sentencing them to an indeterminate jail term, but of at least five years.
"Your crimes are truly exceptional," he said at Sheffield Crown Court, adding: "The bottom line for the two of you is that I'm sure you both pose a very high risk of serious harm to others."
Neither the attackers nor their victims can be named.
The case - which has been compared to the 1993 murder of two-year-old Jamie Bulger by two 10-year-old boys in Liverpool - has fuelled debate about youth crime and social policy in Britain.
The court heard how the brothers watched ultra-violent movies as part of a "toxic home life" of "routine aggression, violence and chaos", while one of them smoked cannabis from the age of nine and drank cider.
Opposition Conservative leader David Cameron raised the case with Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the House of Commons earlier this week, calling for a serious case review into the attacks to be published in full.
Mr Brown, fighting to avoid ouster in elections due by June, insisted that authorities would learn the lessons from the case.
While calling the attacks "one of the most tragic cases we could see", the prime minister said: "I do not want Britain to be defined by the appalling violence and irresponsibility that's been shown to the youngsters by two other youngsters."

    Broken Britain.Boys get 5 years.

Torture boys get five years - social staff blamed for failing to stop them
    Paul Cheston, Courts Correspondent
    22.01.10

Report: 31 missed chances to deal with torture brothers
Profiles: The sadistic torturers and their victims

Two brothers aged 11 and 12 were locked up today for a sadistic attack on a pair of schoolboys that shocked the nation.

They will serve at least five years for what the judge described as a “prolonged and appalling” assault carried out for thrills. The victims, aged only nine and 11, were throttled with cable, cut with barbed wire and forced to perform sex acts.

They were covered in burning plastic sheeting, had a cigarette shoved into an open wound and were punched, kicked and stamped on during a 90-minute orgy of violence. One was so badly injured that he urged his friend to leave him, saying: “You go and I'll just die here.”

Conservative leader David Cameron said the case exposed the breakdown in morals that has left Britain in “social recession”. It also emerged that more than 31 chances to intervene in the boys' lives were missed by nine agencies.

The brothers were 10 and 11 when they carried out the attack in Edlington, South Yorkshire. They showed no emotion as sentence was passed at Sheffield crown court. But as they were led out, the mother of their younger victim banged on a dividing screen and shouted: “You evil little bastards. I hope someone does that to you.”

The brothers pleaded guilty in September to causing grievous bodily harm, robbery and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Today they received indeterminate sentences, with a minimum of five years before they will be considered for release. Sentencing them, Mr Justice Keith said they had got “a real kick out of hurting and humiliating” their young victims. He added: “Your crimes are truly exceptional.

“The bottom line for the two of you is that I'm sure you both pose a very high risk of serious harm to others.” The judge rejected calls to lift the anonymity imposed because of their age.

The attack last April horrified hardened police officers and drew comparisons with the James Bulger murder in Liverpool. At the height of the brutality, the brothers filmed themselves using the victims' mobile phone and told them: “We are going to kill you and then kill your family if you don't shut up.”

At one point the older victim whispered to the younger: “I can't see and I can't move my body — you go and I'll just die here.” The younger boy was able to limp off, “shivering, shaking and mumbling”. When he raised the alarm he was so covered in blood his face looked as if it had been painted, the court heard.

Police and paramedics found the older boy on the verge of death.

The brothers were arrested and tried to lie their way out of trouble. Eventually they admitted what they had done but could not find any coherent reasons. Asked why they had done it, the elder brother said: “Don't know. 'Cos there was nowt to do.” They must sign the sex offenders register and will serve their sentences at secure children's homes and detention centres.

Police and social services were criticised in a case review by child protection officials in Doncaster, the local authority for the area. Today Children's Secretary Ed Balls admitted the system had failed. He said: “We must learn lessons in Doncaster so that in future we don't have a repeat of such a terrible, unusual and horrific case.”

In a speech in Kent today, Mr Cameron said the case was not an “isolated incident of evil”, and the “truly awful” details echoed the deaths of Baby Peter in Haringey and of James Bulger. He said “moral failure” was behind the breakdown of social values: “When young people learn that it pays not to get a job, when the kind-hearted are discouraged from doing good in their community, is it any wonder our society is broken?

“Unless we change the direction of government fundamentally, we will never find the path to social recovery.”

NSPCC chief executive Andrew Flanagan said: “This country has not seen such acts of schoolboy savagery for many years. The sadistic tendencies of these brothers grew unchecked. The case raises serious questions about how children can be left to drift in homes seriously damaged by violence and neglect.”
