Celebrity chef Keith Floyd has died following a heart attack, aged 65. He died at his partner's home in Dorset after the heart attack on Monday night, according to the ghost-writer of his autobiography, James Steen.
Floyd, from Faringdon in Oxfordshire, shot to fame in the 1980s in highly distinctive cookery shows, often fronted with a glass of wine in hand.
His idiosyncratic, often shambolic, style of presentation endeared him to millions of viewers around the world.

Wow, worked with him a couple of times, one hell of a character, a bit short tempered at times: at his best with a few drinks inside of him.

I always thought of him as some kind of a Tommy Cooper of chefs, Funny, entertaining and made lots of mistakes during production and in his real life. He lost a lot of money mostly by being drunk but Stan Green made a lot of money out him.

Cooked proper food that was edible most likely based in red wine not like these new cooks (chefs?) where you get a bit of green leaf with some yuk on it. A great man.

I liked Floyd for his chutzpah, but watching the documentary abut him broadcast this week, he comes across as being a boorish, condescending braggart even though physically an utterly broken man. You can see why 4 wives walked out and his businesses failed one after another. Even his agent became tired of his posing.

Looks like he'd fallen in love with his own television persona.

I liked Floyd. A real mans man. I always cook the same way as him. Someone above described his work as shambolic. Well that's me and Floyd in the kitchen. Cooking with a bottle of wine at hand, (or cooks perks as i used to call it), bloody great pile of used pots and pans around me.
One difference though, he could cook, and my cooking could kill.

Floyd wasn't generally condescending or a braggart although I suspect he harboured some bitterness that he thought his TV shows should have had more recognition in the modern days of celebrity chefs, he was a pioneer in that respect and deserves the kudos.

The 4 wives didn't walk out, it was a flaw in Floyd that he would move on or become impossibly difficult to live with, thereby driving them out. It was a character flaw that he would grudgingly admit to.

Most of the business failings were (in his words) because when he wasn't around the chefs he worked with either spent him out of business on stupid ingredients or drank his entire wine cellar. He freely admitted to being a horrible business man.

I had the privilege to spend almost 2 years working closely with Keith; he was a consummate gentleman and scholar when on duty (unless you were a brainless journalist) and a lovable bastard when not.

/PM me if further info or clarification is required, but I will not say a bad word about him on the record, or off it actually.

Thanks for that post it`s always nice to hear from someone who has actually known the person.

On tv I always found him very entertaining and humorous.
My cooking always seems to turn out better when indulging in a drop or three.

Nothing original about cooking on the telly.

They had Jamie Oliver eulogising on Sky News last night about how lovely jubbly he was........and at the end he said...."I never actually met him though"

Floyd's reaction to that would be....."What a wanker"

Nothing wrong with being like that. Its quite refreshing. Better than Gordon Ramsays scripted expletives.
