A medical expert says Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze’s long battle with pancreatic cancer defied the odds, as tributes rolled in for the star.
Dr Jeffrey Hardacre, a professor of surgery at Case Western Reserve University in the US, said Swayze surprised doctors by surviving with the illness since being diagnosed in January 2008.

PHOTOS: Swayze's life in the movies
"If you were to look at statistics — the prognosis that is given to most patients with metastatic cancer is usually three to six months," he told Fox News. “It certainly has been described for people to live longer than a year — but this is outside of the norm.
"Most people with metastatic pancreatic cancer will not live longer than a year."
At the time of his diagnosis, Swayze was given only a one-percent chance of surviving longer than five years.
VIDEO: He 'knew he might die'
California Governor and former Hollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger led the tributes to Swayze, describing him as a "talented and passionate artist who struck a memorable chord with audiences throughout the world."
"He played a wide range of characters both on stage and in movies and his celebrated performances made the hard work of acting look effortless — which I know from experience is not easy," Schwarzenegger said.
Swayze had bravely fought the disease in the public eye, continuing to work despite cancer treatment and significant weight loss.

I remember him in "Point Break" and thought he was a great actor even when so young.

"Ghost" will remain a favourite of many including me.

    RIP P.S.

I loved the mindless violence of "Roadhouse". Swayze kicked more ass in that movie than Chuck Norris does in ten films. Hero. *sniff*

Not one of the most prolific actors, but I don't remember him in a bad movie. Keeping Mum was the last film I recall seeing him in. Condolences to his wife and familly, may he rest in peace.

    What is a "Chippendale Dancer"??

Pancreatic cancer is supposed to be a painful bitch and almost always fatal,, sure glad to hear Kim Jong il has it too.

To the best of my knowledge, alcohol has a great effect on the pancreas and a lot of alkies do die from it as it is just about inoperable from what I have learned, but that was 30 years back when I was going to night school for my Degrees for my Alcoholic councilors cert..

Shit, I thought "chippendale" was old furniture..
