Denis, 57, fell for Slovakian beauty Betty, 19, married her and life was perfect.. until a rich banker enticed her away with a £500,000 indecent proposal

It was the most unlikely of love affairs. She was 19, stunningly attractive and hoping to be a model. He was 57, divorced and, he admits, “not much of a catch”.
But, lonely and flattered by her attentions, Coventry businessman Denis Morley couldn’t help falling head over heels for Alzbeta Homolkova, the daughter of a penniless family in Slovakia.
Wowed by a stream of gifts including an £8,000 mink coat and a £2,000 Cartier watch, she seemed to have fallen for him too.
Until a multi-millionaire banker made her a £500,000 indecent proposal – at which point Denis was dumped for a man just half his age and with a thousand times his spending power.
“I suppose there’s no fool like an old fool, but love is blind,” says a chastened Denis, now 67.
The sorry saga came to light in the courts last week when he took the unusual step of fighting her divorce petition.
Denis first met teenage Alzbeta – known as Betty – in 1999 while visiting friends in her home town of Dobsina.
At the time he was a smart, self-employed businessman trading in textiles across Europe, who spoke fluent German.
COUSIN SET UP FIRST DATE
“I was blown away,” he says. “This was the most beautiful girl in the world. I had never seen anyone like her.
“I met her through a family I’m friends with. Her cousin set up a date to go for coffee. I was reluctant at first because she was only 19 and I thought, ‘What could she see in a bloke like me?’
“But she was all over me. In a few weeks I was madly in love.”
Three months later, they were starting a new life together.

They moved first to Belgium and then back to a modest semi in Denis’s home city.
He says: “When we left Slovakia she couldn’t even point to England on a map and we spoke in German together.
“She didn’t seem like she was interested in my money but my sister kept warning me, saying she was a gold-digger.
“I always gave in to Betty – whatever she wanted. But she is so beautiful and has these perfect white teeth. She’s got a killer smile – when she smiles at you, you’re finished.”
On July 11, 2002 – two-and-a-half years after they met – they wed in a simple register office ceremony in Coventry with just three friends present.
Denis says: “Whatever people think about the age difference, it was a genuine relationship. She can’t have been acting for all those years. I was besotted. We made love every day at first and she was very lovey-dovey, holding hands in the street. She kept pestering me to have a baby but I wasn’t keen.”
Denis adds: “Everywhere we went men would turn their heads and look at her. She is stunning. Over the years I spent thousands on her. She had an £8,000 mink coat, £2,000 Cartier watch, diamond earrings and a Rolex watch. I spent £350 on a pair of Gina shoes and £450 for a matching handbag. I bought her a £1,200 Fendi handbag. She had all the designer clothes. We went on shopping sprees at Harrods, Selfridges – all the top places.”
SHE STARTS WORK AS ESCORT GIRL
Ironically Betty “kept protesting I was spending too much on her”. But Denis says ruefully: “I wanted to spoil her. I was worried she’d leave me if I didn’t.”
Despite all the gifts, Denis claimed in court that she began working as a £350-an-hour escort. She said it was a step to her dream of being a model. He was enraged – but felt powerless to stop her.
“I didn’t want any of that but in our marriage she was the boss,” says Denis. “She said she wasn’t sleeping with the clients and I believed her. She told me she loved me. We still had a passionate sex life.”

Then in January 2006, she met 35-year-old French-born Yann Samuelides, a managing director at finance house Goldman Sachs.
And in an echo of Robert Redford-Demi Moore movie Indecent Proposal, Yann soon showed Betty his bank statements and promised her £500,000 if she left her husband for him.
Denis claims: “Betty told me about him and said, ‘This man is crazy about me and says he will commit suicide if I stop seeing him. He’s emotionally unstable.

“I even felt a bit sorry for him.
So I just told her to gradually stop seeing Yann.
“But he would take her shopping every Saturday morning and buy her Chanel and Chloe handbags. He gave her an empty backgammon case filled with £3,500 in notes and a £5,000 diamond Chanel ring.
“He whisked her off to Venice. Then he showed her his bank statement – he had nearly £1million in his account and said she could have half if she left me and went to live with him.”
Yann, who by then had been promoted at Goldman Sachs, started renting an £875-a-week London flat for Betty.
One day she called Denis from the airport saying she had left him and had explained in a note left under his pillow.
It read: “I am sorry but this was my only way out! You didn’t listen! I didn’t want to do it this way, but I had to. I hope you forgive me! I love you! Don’t come looking for me! Please! I know is hard for you, but is for me too!!! I will continue to see you so don’t worry. Just give me time!”
BUST-UP IN HOTEL BAR
At the end of October 2007, Denis discovered Betty and Yann were in Slovakia, so he got in his car and drove there from his holiday home in Spain on a non-stop 1,250-mile, 26-hour journey.
“I walked into the bar of the hotel and he was sitting there with his back towards me,” says Denis.
“I grabbed him by the collar and pulled my fist back. I shouted, ‘I’ll kill you, you b******’ but he fell back screaming and waving his legs in the air. I said to Yann, ‘I want my wife back for Christmas’. I thought she’d come back to me but she didn’t.”
As a result of the fracas, Denis has been served with a court order forbidding him from contacting Betty.
Gripped by anger, Denis says of Yann: “This man is detestable. He has destroyed me, completely crippled me.”
Most cuckolded husbands would admit defeat. Yet Denis is fighting tooth and nail in the courts against Betty’s request for a divorce – in the forlorn hope he might somehow win her back.
I’D STILL HAVE HER BACK
Representing himself at Clerkenwell and Shoreditch County Court in London on September 4 – because he is virtually broke after squandering his savings on Betty – he accused Yann of turning her head. And he admitted to a judge how he even threatened to kill Yann after tracking him down.
He cut a sorry figure on the court steps – gaunt, dark circles under his eyes, thinning hair combed in a “Bobby Charlton” across his head – as Betty, now 28, turned up with Yann for the hearing, which was adjourned until October 13.
In her divorce petition Betty stated: “The marriage has broken down irretrievably.”
She added that her husband had “behaved in such a way that the Petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the Respondent”."
Her petition also states that Denis “sent a barrage of unpleasant and threatening text messages” to her new partner.
But as Denis shuffles through his court papers preparing for the next stage of the divorce, he confesses: “The sad thing is I still love her and I’d take her back tomorrow if she asked me to forgive her.”
