New Zealand - Kiwi roasted pet dog

New Zealand row over roasted pet

    FROM THE BBC WORLD SERVICE

    More from BBC World Service

A heated debate has begun in New Zealand after a man killed and roasted his family's pit bull terrier, with the intention of eating it.

Paea Taufa, of Tongan origin, killed his dog in February after he decided it had become too much of a nuisance.

He struck the dog with a hammer, slit its throat and roasted it.

His actions sparked a row after the authorities decided that the animal had been killed humanely and that Mr Taufa had done nothing illegal.

Under New Zealand's Animal Welfare Act it is legal to kill a dog if it is slaughtered swiftly and painlessly.

A commentator in the New Zealand Herald newspaper, Brian Rudman, praised Mr Taufa, saying that pit bull terriers were dangerous.

"They should be giving him a medal. If every pit bull owner in the land followed his lead, New Zealand would be a safer place to live."

He added: "The pit bull fraternity should be persuaded that their pets, once barbecued, are as delicious as crayfish or rare sirloin."

    Culture differences?

Unsurprisingly, animal rights activists have been outraged, and some are now for calling for the law to change.

If every pit bull owner in the land followed his lead, New Zealand would be a safer place to live
    Brian Rudman, New Zealand Herald

Robyn Kippenberger, Chief Executive of New Zealand's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says people have been greatly disturbed by the incident.

"In New Zealand... we regard... a dog as a man's best friend and a lot of people have been outraged by this killing," she told the BBC World Service.

She said that she had been speaking to people from the Tongan community and had discovered that this was not a cultural issue.

"Tongans aren't accustomed to eating dogs. It's not like Vietnamese or Chinese cultures where dogs are farmed for food.

"Tongans say that this is quite rare, and that it's only poor people who eat their dogs."

This is not the first time the practice of eating dogs has been seen as culturally sensitive.

In 2008, China ordered dog meat to be taken off the menu at its 112 official Olympic restaurants in order to avoid offending foreign visitors.

Alot of people eat dog out here in the islands, man some of them might be only or two generations off being cannibals. Dog is ok but quite strong tasting.

You should be careful. The dog may bite back even when dead. It is said thet deadly infection can be passed on from the dog when eaten.

Absurd. There's no horror we won't inflict on pigs, cows, and chickens but kill a dog (painlessly, by the sounds of it) and it's the worst thing imaginable.

People have other animals as pets too, cows, sheep, horses, Burros, Cats, Dogs, Chickens.
I was told by my Grandma not to make pets of the animals on the ranch as some would be sold and some would be eaten so not to be hurt if that happened to an animal I was close to.

But she also knew that there was a tad of Pommie blood in our family and maybe just told me that to keep me from fucking the sheep.

Not unusual any more for the Koreans, Viets, Cambodians and Thai to butcher cats and dogs for table items anymore.
Fact if you got a litter of cats to get rid of, just put them in a cardboard box and tape it shut and go over into the Zip neighborhoods and set it out on the curb, and if you drive down the street and watch, some zipperhead kid will come and look in the box, then snatch it up and haul ass for home with the box.
Saves expense for the SPCA to adopt the cats out yourself.

Seems a bit overblown. Better he eats the dog than starts cooking his next door neighbour.

    February? old news
I'd be happy if the locals would eat a few round my place; there are 15 on the 1.1km track between here and the main road, but a few must have had the night off as only eleven lunged at me when i walked hom Monday night.
Anybody bother with rabioes shots? They were reocmmended when i got here but never got round to it.

Doesn't surprise me really. After watching those Lord of the Ring movies and seeing those Urukai types running around raping, pillaging and even comitting canibalism. NZ really is a savage land.

    Other pets for eating

When I lived in Hawii, my Filipino landlord, wife Chinese brings me a bowl of vegatbles meat and rice because being single, she thought I was starving to death. Politely I ate it. Then she tells me it was...MONKEY and bananas, and other vegs

they need to watch John Safron , Master Chef - 1 of 2 pilot shows that did not get aired

The second pilot was titled John Safran: Master Chef. This pilot focused on the food industry. Notably it featured a cooking segment where Safran prepared a beef dish. The twist comes when he arrives in an abattoir and shows detailed footage of cows being slaughtered to complete the dish

Only conceited , hypocritical westerners can find eating one kind of animal acceptable, whist another is considered odd or antisocial.

I can tell you cows , fowl , lambs, pigs, dolphin and maybe even fish etc. feel just as much pain and fear death just as much as you or me, or a dog.

And quite a few of the animals I've known are far more worthy than many, many humans.

That picture is disturbing, that's no way to pick up an adult animal and unless the dog catcher wants a nasty case of ringworm fungus, I would suggest plastic gloves as requisite.

Whacking it with a hammer and then slitting its throat is pretty much the way a slaughter house would do it anyway.

If he'd tortured it I could see their point, but from the details it sounds like he killed it quite humanely.

That dog looks like a vicious little bastard, or was. Wonder what the reaction would be if the guy started to roast a few kitties?

Actually there was some issue or other a few years back as apparently they were being 'live shipped' to some Middle Eastern market or other and many were dying during transit in pretty horrific conditions.

Anway I agree with the point you're making but personally I could never eat something like dog (mind you I can't bring myself to eat something like duck either, just seems weird to me).

That is better than the HALAL killing of just the slit throat and bleeding to death standing I would have to say.
So Musty my Dear, you had better get used to Halal and Kosher killing methods as they have about taken over here on planet Earth.
Plus that is much better than the Mike Vick killed his extra Pit Bulls.
And better than the SPCA way of putting animals in a chamber hooked to the intake of an air compressor and sucking a vacume in the chamber with the animals.
Maori/Samoan eat a lot of dogs from what I understand, tho they ain't quite civilized either..
