London - Jewellers raid nets £40m of items

Jewellers raid nets £40m of items

    The men were smartly dressed

Robbers made off with nearly £40m worth of items in a raid on a jewellery store in central London, police have said.

Two men armed with handguns threatened staff at Graff jewellers in New Bond Street on 6 August before taking 43 items, including rings and watches.

They dragged a female member of staff outside as they left the shop and fired a shot, although no-one was injured.

Detectives have released CCTV images of the men they want to speak to and pictures of some of the stolen items.

    'Extremely dangerous'

The value of the items stolen has been estimated at $65m (just under £40m).

Det Ch Insp Pam Mace from the Flying Squad said: "This was a well planned robbery with a number of vehicles used to help the robbers escape.

"These men are extremely dangerous and fired at least two shots in busy London streets as they made their getaway.
More than 40 items were taken

"Someone knows who these men are, they would undoubtedly have spoken about it beforehand or boasted about it afterwards."

The "smartly dressed" pair escaped in a blue BMW.

They fired once while leaving the store and then again in Dover Street where they abandoned the BMW, police said.

The robbers then got into a silver Mercedes and drove into Farm Street where it is believed some of the suspects got into another vehicle, possibly a black Ford Galaxy or Volkswagen Sharan.

The first suspect is described as white, about 30 years old, slim and between 5ft 10ins and 6ft tall.

The other man is described as black, in his 30s, 6ft tall, more well- built than the first suspect, with very short hair.

Doubt it planned it properly. They are in Spain now.

It`s one of the best if not the best diamond jewelers in London.

There must have been a ready market for the goods which they nicked. Some of the high class watches and items could not be passed on easily. The watches will all have serial numbers on and I would imagine that some of the larger stones will be laser ID marked.
The cops kept it under their hats for 5 days as they either know the two robbers from the stills (they are easily identifiable as the pics are clear) and were trying to find them or they were covertly watching the UK points of exit for them to appear.

Can't imagine its very easy to sell on stolen 1 million quid items, extremely limited market regardless of what discount you give.

Apparently they used at least three cars. They switched to a silver Merc in Barclay Square and then to another and then disappeared.

Or they'll break them apart, pull out the stones from the rings and necklaces, sell them separate or in a bundle. The metals could be melted down and sold on also, but it's the gems that are the money.

It was an inside job, the people knew they were coming.

Easy cut up some of those items into individual gems.

I find it funny this copper saying these men are extremely dangerous, they didn't shoot or kill anybody unlike the police who shot and killed that guy on the underground in front of 100s of commuters, I would say the police are more dangerous and stupid than the 2 gold shop robbers.

    Arrest over £40m jewellery raid

    Arrest over £40m jewellery raid

A man has been arrested in connection with a robbery at a central London jewellery shop in which items valued at £40m were stolen.

Police said the 50-year-old was arrested by officers outside a home in Ilford, east London. He was later released on bail.

Details of the arrest were only released on Wednesday.

The robbery, carried out at Graff jewellers in New Bond Street, was Britain's biggest gem heist.

Two men with handguns threatened staff in the raid on 6 August before taking 43 items.

No-one was hurt, but a female employee was dragged outside by the pair who fired a shot into the ground to warn off pursuing members of the public.
Police described the two robbers as "extremely dangerous"

A Metropolitan Police spokesman would not confirm why it took two days before the force released details of the arrest.

He said: "Suffice to say it was operational reasons."

The Met said the arrest was made after police searched several houses.

The spokesman said it took several days for the value of the items taken to be confirmed because the firm's insurance company was still assessing the loss.

Police are following up several other leads.

The £40m haul is exceeded only by the £53m raid on a Securitas depot in Kent in 2006.

The stolen jewellery included a pair of white round diamond double-hoop earrings, a yellow diamond flower necklace and a platinum white Marquise diamond ring.

You've got to find a bit hard to believe that somewhere would hold £40 M worth of stuff in places where people can just walk out with it (all be it firing guns).

You think that stuff would be in vaults with restricted acces, mind you what do I know.

    Cheers

    Exactly.

They may be armed but what proof is there that they were dangerous? No-one got hurt and just two warning shots were fired. One when passers by went to grab them coming out of the shop and another when they crashed into the taxi again to give them some space to get away. Not even definite that it was live ammo.

Meticulously planned and fair play to them if they get away with it.

Don't really understand the jealousy angle in terms of the passers by? Surely they were just acting on instinct as people were shouting to call the police etc. and the robbers had brought the shop assistant out with them.

They will indeed be looking over their shoulders for a long time. However, the reward if successful will mean that, that time is spent in complete luxury.
