The liberal grauniad claims Fifth of Britons unknowingly aid child trafficking

More than a fifth of Britons may be unknowingly contributing to child trafficking, a survey published today reveals.
People who buy pirate DVDs and roses from street vendors, smoke home-grown cannabis, give money to child beggars and use prostitutes may be supporting what the United Nations has described as "a modern day slave trade", says research published by ECPAT, the international campaign against the sexual exploitation of children.
According to the survey, published at the launch of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness, 89% of those questioned were not aware that their activities may be contributing to illegal businesses run by networks who smuggle children from China, Africa and Afghanistan.
"If you engage in these activities then you are supporting the illegal economy and that includes trafficking," said Chris Beddoe, chief executive of ECPAT UK. "Children are trafficked into the UK every day, across big cities and small towns. They have their identities removed, they are raped, beaten and forced to work in deplorable conditions."
The Home Office's UK Human Trafficking Centre received three reports a week about children smuggled into the UK between April and June, the first three months of operation of a national referral mechanism, and this is thought to represent just a fraction of the cases.
Detective Inspector Gordon Valentine, who heads Operation Palladin, the Metropolitan police's specialist anti-child trafficking team, said they have worked on cases where DVD-selling rings were linked to child traffickers. Afghan children are often used to work in illegal indoor cannibas farms and girls from Africa, China and Eastern Europe are known to have been trafficked into prostitution.
According to the survey conducted across 17 UK cities, a third of adults were not aware of the extent of child trafficking in the UK and a third believe trafficked children only end up in foreign countries.
"There has been a culture of disbelief," said Jan Buckingham, values director at the Body Shop which is helping to fund ECPAT UK as part of the campaign. "People don't see that children are being trafficked into the UK. They turn a blind eye."
The campaign which will be backed by posters in 300 Body Shop windows across the UK. The UK appears to be a hub for an international trade with children from 52 nations trafficked in a single year, but calls for better care for victims have been resisted by the government, according to ECPAT UK.
The report came amid warnings that the global economic crisis is set to increase the international trade. A parallel report by ECPAT, which works in 75 countries, predicted that with a further 65m people falling below the poverty line, more families will be tempted to place their children in exploitative situations .
It said budgets for education of girls may be the first to be cut in the down turn by some governments, leaving them vulnerable to traffickers. The report's authors also anticipate that brothel customers will move downmarket to save money, which may put more trafficked children at risk.

The grauniad is a feckin pinco liberal paper.

could just as easily blame the big CD/DVD corporations for their high prices - causing many folk to buy cheap pirate copies.

This is such BS... these people LIKE to get upset and all bent out of shape as well as masturbate over their guilt complex. That would be fine with me - do what you want - but then they publish this sort of thing instead of DOING something about it.

Do research. Figure out how to make trafficking unprofitable. No one's doing that, and that's the issue. Thats why traffickers can live in a legally grey area. There needs to be a standard way to deal with the victims and perpetrators.

I kinda liked the movie "Taken"... though in the real world sending in Rambo is not a solution of course

Interesting reality distortion field some inhabit....the research was "published by ECPAT, the international campaign against the sexual exploitation of children."

The Guardian simply reported its findings. As it should, as this is news...and it's a newspaper...

So the organisation "End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purpose", sensibly shortened to ECPAT, isn't telling the truth because their report was published in a very mildly liberal paper. Amazing. Conservatives really are as thick as they appear to be.

That is a load of old cobblers a pure guess and sesationalism to give the article more appeal.

How many child beggars do we see in the UK? I certainly don`t see any.

Roses from street vendors? Not seen any in the UK.

Don`t get me wrong I am against all abuse of children, but the Guardian`s style of this article is misleading.

Gotta laugh at their inability to interpret reality. Hilarious. Explains a lot.

Some people just don't want to let the facts and harsh reality get in the way of them selfishly enjoying themselves on the cheap, sleezy creeps.

^^^ It's from the report. The newspaper isn't making these statistics up - if you look on the BBC, you'll see the same report with the same stats ("Of those polled, 22% admitted to buying fake DVDs or visiting brothels, which can perpetuate child trafficking.") If you think there's something wrong with ECPAT's research or analysis, then fine - explain your criticism but objecting to their work simply on the grounds that the Guardian published a story on it is ridiculous.

I will ask you the following Dan.

Where in the UK do you see street vendors selling roses?

Where in the UK do you see child beggars on the street?

I don`t smoke home grown canabis and I don`t know anybody who does.

I am sure that the work of ECPAT is excellent and I am sure that The Body Shop will also benefit from this publicity.

I am certain that if somebody asked me the questions that were asked I would also say that I was unaware as suppsoedly did the 89%

Such a long way to go and I doubt I`ll see any.

No don`t see any and I travel extensively in the UK. See plenty in Thailand though where the kids are exploited by their guardians some Thai and many Cambodian.
    As I said sensationalist journalism

If you've grown it yourself how can that be contributing to the slave trade?

Jokers who write spuriously outlandish articles like that just serve to discredit a serious issue.

I mean they're trying to tell me the bloke who sells DVD's in the pub is doing it specifically so he can get kids to act as prostitutes, not just so he can top up his giro without doing a 9-5 like most people who have a few earners.

    Cheers

In my old city in the UK the Police and social services had yet another 'crackdown' on street sellers and beggars last month. None of the beggars were found to be homeless as many claimed to be. Some were earning up to 200 quid a day and one woman admitted begging as she wanted a new kitchen. The kiddy sellers were all reported to be Romanian 'Gypsies'.
