Dying Chopper Read 'off the grog'
Celebrity standover man Mark "Chopper" Read says he hasn't touched alcohol for 18 months as he battles liver failure and hepatitis C.
The Melbourne criminal, who reportedly appeared seriously ill during a live show at a Brisbane pub overnight, has previously been given between two and five years left to live.
"That was nearly five years ago (the doctor) said that to me," Read slurred during an interview with ABC Radio.
"I don't know if that's still the case. I haven't been back for another opinion."
During his touring show The Real Underbelly at the Narangba Valley Tavern, Read was described as being an "unsteady, sickly man who could barely keep his eyes open."
Audience members said afterwards he appeared to be suffering from a "nervous disorder", shuffling around on stage and muttering.
"I've got cirrhosis of the liver. I haven't had a drink in about 18 months," Read said.
"There's no cure for that."
Read, who shot to infamy with a series of books documenting his life of crime with Underbelly writers Andrew Rule and John Silvester, last year admitted contracting hepatitis C sharing razor blades in prison.
He said despite his desire to watch sons Charlie and Roy grow up, he had refused a liver transplant that could save him.
"I'm not going to ask for a liver transplant," he said last night.
"It's not fair. I'm 55 years old. I'm not going to put my need against a 10-year-old child, you know."
Read will perform a series of live shows in Brisbane and is working on a rap CD and a DVD to be titled Fatbelly.
"It's about me, my favourite topic."
