Trial could lead to £1.30-a-mile charges

Hundreds of drivers are being recruited to take part in government-funded road-pricing trials that could result in charges of up to £1.30 a mile on the most congested roads.
The test runs will start early next year in four locations and will involve fitting a satellite-tracking device to the vehicles of volunteers. An on-board unit will automatically deduct payments from a shadow account set up in the driver’s name.
Paul Clark, the Transport Minister, confirmed yesterday that the trials would proceed despite previous statements from the Government suggesting that it had abandoned the idea of a national road-pricing scheme. In 2004 a feasibility study considered a range of possible prices, up to £1.30 a mile. It said that the highest rate “would be paid by only 0.5 per cent of traffic”.
The on-board unit could be used to collect all road charges, such as congestion charges in London and Manchester and tolls for crossing bridges and using new lanes on motorways.

The Government is threatening to withhold £1.5 billion of public funding for public transport in Manchester unless the city agrees to become a guinea pig for pay-as-you-drive road pricing.
Geoff Hoon, the Transport Secretary, said funding for new tram lines, extra buses and trains would be cancelled unless a majority of Greater Manchester's 1.8 million population voted “yes” in next month's road pricing referendum.
Mr Hoon's comments, in an interview with The Times, angered opponents of Manchester's proposed charging scheme. They accused the Government of trying to bully the city into voting for a tax on commuting by car.
Under the scheme, drivers would have electronic tags fitted to their cars and set up prepaid accounts. Up to £5 a day would be deducted automatically from their accounts as they passed roadside beacons on an inner and outer ring around the city.

Use something similar here in Korea for express ways and toll roads. Automatically deducts.

NOt for the average street though.

There's an EZ pass system in many US states too. It's an device mounted (stickered) on the car that automatically deducts a toll from the registered owner's credit card. Of course drivers have the option of not using the toll road. And I don't think the tolls are anywhere near £1.30 a mile.
