"Thanks for your speedy reply Ed, there were a lot of expats who have lived in Thailand for several years (and will not be celebrating Christmas in the UK anyway) that were extremely concerned with the renaming of this holy time. I have placed your response on the web board which they frequently use and where your article turned up to gasps of shock and horror today. Though a new discussion on ladyboys has just turned up in the main section of the forum so I expect the rabble will be distracted for a few minutes elsewhere.

Actually maybe I should email Ed about my Pakistani friend and tell him how he refers to himself and fellow countrymen as Paki nationals, sadly he has never been to the UK and so has never been told by the white middle class dogooders that this is indeed a racist word, although he travels to Germany and Holland every year for business.

Anyway, the next cnut that calls me a "Brit" I shall do something about, not sure what yet, but it will be something.

You should see what the Post office have done for the Chrismas stamps in the UK this year.

The Madonna of Humility by Lippo di Dalmasio will appear on the 1st class stamp while the 2nd class stamp will feature William Dyce's Madonna and Child.

Another collection of six stamps will celebrate the UK's love of pantomime with festive images of performers in costume from Cinderella, Peter Pan, Aladdin and Snow White.

The Pantomime stamps are available in a range of values for UK and overseas mail.

It is the first time customers have been able to choose between religious and secular stamps since the Royal Mail issued its first Christmas collection more than 40 years ago.

The Royal Mail's head of special stamps, Julietta Edgar, said: "Every year customers look forward to our Christmas stamps, which have been brightening up the festive season for more than 40 years.

"This year we are delighted to offer our customers a choice of Christmas stamps and the images will be seen on millions of letters and cards throughout the UK as well as on gifts sent across the globe."

The postal service predicts more than two billion items will be sent over the festive period, including 750 million Christmas cards.

Monday, December 15 is tipped to be the busiest day of the year, with a predicted 123 million items set to hit the postal system compared with an average daily figure of 80 million.

The Royal Mail's last recommended posting dates for UK mail are Saturday, December 20 for first-class items and Thursday, December 18 for second class.

That 81p stamp is mis-leading. The basic cost of a first class stamp is currently 36p.
