BP's profits surge to £6.4bn

BP has reported mammoth third-quarter profits of £6.4bn as the firm reaped the benefits of record oil prices.

The oil company's huge haul for the period from July to September this year is a whopping 148% above its profits for the same period of 2007.

Its profits came as crude oil prices hit a new peak above $147 a barrel in mid-July - leading to huge price rises at the pump for motorists.
