A SCARBOROUGH man was given a knockout pill and robbed while in a hotel in Pattaya, Thailand.
Bill Dodd, who owns the Roast Inn sandwich shop in Huntriss Row, was "out cold" for 26 hours after the incident, when thieves robbed him of just £90 and his mobile phone.
Speaking from Thailand, Mr Dodd told the Evening News: "These things happen all the time over here.
"I was having a few drinks in the hotel and I suddenly started feeling ill. I was taken to my room and that's all I remember. I woke up in hospital. I certainly wasn't feeling too well when I woke up.
"When I got back to my hotel room from the hospital I discovered that around 5,000 Baht – about £90 – and my mobile phone had been taken.
"My passport and other valuables were in the hotel safe. You've got to be careful over here, this sort of thing isn't unusual. I'm fine now and will be staying here until November."
Mr Dodd said he believes he was the victim of one of the "date rape" drugs, which he says are frequently used in robberies in Thailand.
Common "date rape" drugs include GHB – gamma hydroxybutyric acid; Rohypnol – lunitrazepam; and Ketamine – ketamine hydrochloride. Their effect is to render victims physically helpless and unable to remember what happened. The drugs often have no colour, smell or taste and are easily added to flavoured drinks without the victim's knowledge.
Mr Dodd was in Thailand on holiday and visiting family.
His wife, Kirati, who is herself Thai, is still in Scarborough. She said: "It is a poor country and this happens all the time. Bill is very lucky to be alright."
