JAIPUR - Branded witch, tribal woman forced to dip hands in hot oil

Branded witch, tribal woman forced to dip hands in hot oil

JAIPUR: A 32-year-old tribal woman was severely beaten up and forced to pick a silver coin from a vessel filled with boiling oil after a village panchayat in Sirohi district accused her of practising witchcraft. The woman, who was later thrown out of her house by own family, is now undergoing treatment in a hospital for serious injuries.

The incident took place on Sunday but police was informed about it only on Wednesday, after which five of the 23 accused have been arrested.

According to police, two members of a Gharasiya (ST) family in Khara village of Sirohi had died in the past one month. The family accused Gujriya (32), a resident of same village, for the deaths. The matter was brought before the village panchayat, which directed the woman to undergo a 'pareeksha' (test).

A group of villagers, including the panchayat members (Patels), then took the woman to a deserted location and forced her to pick a silver coin from a vessel containing boiling oil. The woman suffered severe burns on both her hands and she fell unconscious. However, this did not deter the villagers and they thrashed her badly with hot iron rods due to which she received head injuries. She was then forcibly taken to the Gharasiyas' house and told to ward-off the miseries from the family by chanting magic words.

The villagers then dumped her outside her house. Her family members, including her husband, did not allow her inside and instead admitted her to a hospital and left in a hurry. Later, a few villagers reported the matter to Abu Road police. Thereafter, a complaint was registered against 23 persons, including the Gharasiyas.

A villager, speaking about the practice prevalent in some areas, said: "Women, whosoever, labelled as a 'witch' by the villagers has to pick a silver coin from a tank filled with boiling oil, with both her hands. If her hands are burnt, her witchhood is confirmed, otherwise she is declared innocent." Once 'proved' a witch, she is forced to free the 'victim family' from her 'curse' and leave the village forever, he said.

Station house officer, Abu Road, Deva Ram Chaudhary said police have arrested Partha, Dharma, Kesha, Cheena and Bhura while the rest were absconding. Raids were being conducted to nab the others named in the FIR, he said.

Describing the incident as a serious one, SP, Sirohi, Vijendra Jhala told TOI that strict action would be taken against the guilty.

Just a hunch, but I suspect the accusers would also fail this test is asked to perform it.

Peasant 1: A witch! We have found a witch! Can we burn her?
Belvedere: How do you know that she is a witch?
Peasant 2: Because she looks like one!
Witch: I am not a witch! I am not a witch! They dressed me up like this, and this is not my nose it is a false one!
[Belvedere pulls off the false nose and opens his helmet]
Peasant 1: Well, we did do the nose, and the hat.
Peasant 2: She has a wart.
Belvedere: Why do you think that she is a witch?
Peasant 2: Well, she turned me into a newt.
[Belvedere gives him a disbelieving look]
    Belvedere: A newt?
    [Silence]
Peasant 2: Well I got better.
    Peasant 3: Burn her anyway.
    [Yells of "Burn her!"]
Belvedere: There are ways of telling whether she is a witch. Tell me, what do you do with witches?
    Peasants: Burn them!
Belvedere: Now, what do burn besides witches?
Peasant 3: More witches! [receives a punch from Peasant 1; silence]
    Peasant 2: Wood?
Belvedere: So, why do witches burn? [more silence]
Peasant 2: Because there made of wood?
Belvedere: So, how do you tell if she is made of wood?
Peasant 3: Build a bridge out of her!
Belvedere: Ah, but cant you also build bridges out of stone?
    Peasant 3: Oh, right.
Belvedere: Tell me, does wood sink?
    Peasant 1: No, it floats.
Belvedere: What also floats in water?
[lots of yelling and many wrong and random answers including very small rocks]
    King Arthur: A duck!
    Belvedere: Exactly!
Peasant 2: So if she weighs as much as a duck she is made of wood.
    Belvedere: And therefore?
    Peasants: A witch!
Belvedere: We shall use my largest scales.
[Having been revealed to weigh the same as a duck, therefore proving her a witch, the crowd goes insane]
    Witch: It's a fair cop.

Just another case of why the world needs to be freed old norms, ancient rituals, and religious superstition. Anyone see the story of the guy in India who married a dog to atone for his stoning of street dogs which gained him a curse?
