well they think they have finally figured the Aurora

    updated 3:17 p.m. ET July 24, 2008
A flotilla of NASA probes has solved the 30-year mystery behind the most colorful aurora displays on Earth and the explosive magnetic "substorms" that spawn them.
NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft in different orbits around Earth spotted the trigger for the substorms, powerful energy bursts in the planet's magnetic field that can interfere with satellites, power grids and supercharge the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.
"We discovered what sparks the magnificent light show of the aurora," said THEMIS principal investigator Vassilis Angelopoulos, a space scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

NASA spacecraft reveal cause of auroras - Space.com - MSNBC.com

I saw it for the first time about 60 years ago and thought it was the most beautiful thing I had even seen and to watch it was such a relaxing experience and every time for years when it would come on and I would be driving and outside of a town I just had to stop and set on the outside of the car or truck no matter how cold it was and watch for hours.
The folks told me about Sun Explosions or Sun Spots that were what caused it, so I have known since I was 15 years old and learned from some old people that most had never even finished grade school, if they ever started what caused the Aurora, and now these big brain assholes with years of schooling and billons of dollars worth of rockets and scientific equipment has came up with the same story as the old sour doughs did in 1950.

It is beautiful from lower Canada or from the San Juan Islands, but if you ain't seen it from above the Arctic Circle then you ain't really seen it in all it's wonders.

It's not a guess, I calculated from what he said. At least someone where "senior member" really makes sense.

It's amazing though, you are nine years older than my father (and make as little sense as him).

If it's a quiet night and they are bright you can actually hear them crackle. A truly amazing experience.

Thanks, BG. My favourite winter phenomenon. Indescribable. You gotta be there. Me and the universe melding in crisp 45 below weather.

Having watched the lights in Northern Saskatchewan, I can say it is one of the most incredible experiences a young person can have. I had no idea of the scientific reason but was completely absorbed and fascinated by the spectacle.

Suppose it's good science has explained the Aurora but somehow it takes the wonder out of the equation. I prefer the American Indian explanation.

"The dancing lights are powerful guardian spirits, the spirits of ancestors round dancing across the northern sky, weaving their way through the black of the night, moving in harmony with the eternal rhythms of Father Sky and Mother Earth."
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect,"

I would rather believe that than the shit that they come up with to justify the loads of money that they fuck off, especially when it is more evidence that they were right in the first place over half century ago.
