The Atlas Detector - Recreating a Black Hole

Forget global warming & all that malarky, scientists have devised a brand-new method of destroying mankind. It's a machine called the Atlas Detector & some maniacs in lab coats - 1,800 of them - plan to turn it on sometime soon & recreate a black hole.

I won't pretend I have a clue how the thing works, but I read somewhere that black holes are best avoided.

It's a big bastard, about half as big as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and weighs the same as the Eiffel Tower.

It's just part of a facility known as the Large Hadron Collider, which is a huge circular tube buried 300ft under the Swiss/French border in a tunnel 16.7 miles long.

The men in white coats plan to fire two beams of protons in opposite directions around the tunnel and make them collide head-on at nearly the speed of light, creating the black hole.

Sounds like a bad idea to me.

I got the pics from lots of different sites.

Check it out on Wiki - lots of technical info.

ATLAS experiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Recreating a black hole is supposed to tell us what happened at the start of the big bang. They're going to film it with a special camera & all that.

I reckon these muppets are going to cause another big bang, playing with toys like that.

^Ah, another evil experiment by CERN, the guys who developed the worldwide web. I read a fun Dan Brown novel called Angels and Demons where a CERN project went awry, end of the world, etc..

Not sure what the truth is vs. fiction on this project though....

I've heard of this before. And yes also quite concerned that we are trying to make something as massively powerful, destructive and dangerous as a black hole on the planet. Let's hope I don't know what I am talking about and it's actually perfectly safe.

Fear is - blackhole won't be able to be shut down once created and it will swallow up everything.

The usually optimistic and trusting Britmaveric agreeing that this might be a bad idea has filled me with even more dread about this project.

(Though I half expect Brit to also think Pattaya will not be effected by an earth swallowing black hole)

^ It does look kind of fun doesn't it.

I say start it up, if it wipes out he planet then so be it.

Kind of a funny end to human existence and I do like a good comedy.

Pattaya would more likely disappear into a brown hole

It's just fcuking cool. We're bound to wipe ourselves out one day, so rather than some nuclear holocaust in some pointless war I saw roll out the black holes. A matchox full of black hole stuff weighs about the same as the sun, or something ridiculous like that.

Try this headline: Black Hole Eats Earth - International Herald Tribune

Scientists dont think it will happen - chances are small. However even small chance is smth I doubt I would take due to the ramifications.

Was this not eerily predicted by John Titor?

For those of you in the dark, John Titor was the famous internet forum poster (some say the best troll of all time) who said he was a time traveller from the year 2036 sent back to retrieve an IBM computer to debug some mainframe in the future.
Mortals you defy the Gods, I sentence you to travel among unknown stars, until you find the Kingdom of Hades, your bodies will stay as lifeless as stone.

    Yep, I was right.

John Titor predicted that the CERN institution would accidentally discover the technology that allows for time travel. So far, his predictions have been tracking well with reality...CERN is now underway building their biggest-ever proton-proton collider. Some researchers have now pointed out that one result might be the creation of "Mini Black Holes", or as John Titor called them...microsingularities...

I have known about this for a long time now, I was at a talk the other week with prof Richard Dawkins and my brother asked him a question about it.

Personally I don't care if it blows us up coz we won't feel a thing lol

However it just goes to show how little control we have over our lives. I mean most people havent heard of this thing, even though it has taken many years to build.

You have to ask yourself why isn't this publicized? It's because it could obliterate our planet and some people might object to that. There was no consensus or vote.

People in power just decided they would build it, and that was that. The little people have no say.

I say go for it however

I had a thread about him, he is a fraud, most of his predictions didn't happen or were predictible for those that did,

the CERN collider was being built when it started making those claims,

There was however one or two predictions that were very hard to predict, that did happen, sort of, probably because he was a student at some Physicist big university and was following closely academic research on that front,

The Everett-Wheeler model, better known as the many-worlds interpretation, i.e.that there are alternate universes means his predictions are not falsifiable.

They could have happened in similar alternate Worlds to our own.

It's an utterly brilliant troll, if he wasn't really from the future.

The main purpose of the experiment is to find a Higgs particle, that may be responsible for giving mass to matter; creating a mini-blackhole is a theoretical possibility, and nowhere near the scale of being dangerous

Black holes gain power as they absorb more stuff, don't they?

It might not be dangerous from the moment they turn it on, but after it's sucked in a few scientists & that machine thing that made it, anything could happen.
