I found my way to a small bar in Singapore on 9-11 to watch the news. A few French and Germans were there, and they were all saying "the US deserved it". The bartendress just handed me a box of tissue and several glasses of wine.

Chinthee, thanks for clearing up Clinton and Cheney.

By the by, you should see the Canadians now that the loonie is averaging par or better against the greenback. Fekin smug fat farmers, this lot.

I also think Americans can be much more sophisticated than other nationalities in terms of generating, expressing and bringing ideas to life. To simplify, think of "A Beautiful Mind." And they are creative and diverse. I loved walking in New York, waiting to jaywalk with everyone else. A lady in Gucci, furs, Blahniks and enough diamonds to stock Tiffany's next to a bag lady in rags stuffed with newspapers, a black guy in serious sweats (ie, jog suit), a Cyndi Lauper-type chewing gum, and a Brooklyn Jew yakking on her cell phone. Brilliantly rich and diverse.
I remember one secretary at our NY office (Italian from Brooklyn). She used to liaise everyday with our printshop boys in London and got on famously with one bloke named Mark. She loved those English accents. She was also a racist and even told Mark she hated niggers. We peed ourselves one year when the two sections swapped staff photos. Mark is black.
Ah, life is good. It's so fun to explore and do and see.

Well, there used to be heaps of America-bashing/Jimmy Carter-bashing amongst the Thais back in the day so no, it's always been around. Of late, the BDS seems to be more virulent though...

    OK, back to geography.

Answer: Costa Rica (no, I don't think they have army-envy either)

As for America bashing, I think it's just human nature to bitch about the rich guy on the hill who flaunts his wealth at every turn.

I was in Thailand when Katrina struck New Orleans and I remember my squeeze du jour saying something to the effect that she was happy that America was suffering a grand tragedy. I didn't like what she said but I could understand why she felt that way.

Costa Rica has the best standard of living in Central America. And finances no armed forces- I wonder if there is a link?

There is a lot of variety.

And I also find this with many other western and non-western nationality groups.

Tourists and expats tend to have significant differences among their own nationalities.

Very true, specially the Yanks, as soon as they have been around for a while, they actually realize that there is a world outside the US...

I've never seen that, nor met anyone that has experienced that.

But perceptions do change over time. In my case it was getting more information, and being more exposed to world media sources, rather than American media sources, and publications.

    Among other things.

I don't know any Yanks that have traveled abroad.

In fact I've read where their legs are receeding due to lack of use. And their ears are getting smaller, their mouths bigger. Their brains have always been pretty small and their penises are shrinking.

If they're horribly offensive, like miserable sports and never travel outside their comfy little sphere, why do they consume so much of your thought?
