Notre Dame cathedral in Paris engulfed by devastating fire

A major fire has broken out at Paris's famous medieval Notre Dame cathedral, leading firefighters to evacuate the area around one of the city's most visited landmarks.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the top of the gothic cathedral, as flames spread from the cathedrals two bell towers toward its giant spire, which has collapsed.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the fire, which drew crowds of people to gather in nearby squares.

Notre Dame was in the midst of renovations, with some sections under scaffolding, while bronze statues were removed last week for works.

yea and it came to pass that god was indeed sorely vexed by the filthiness and foulness of his priests that hath lifteth the shirts of the choirboys and then verily and with evil intent fellated their manhoods and upon them performed other hellish perversions until in his great anger he sent a fiery brimstone to rain upon their temple until it was but a pile of stones upon the earth. saint emmanuelle of macron wept great tears but god was greatly pleased with his work and smiled.

How can the fire service be ruling out arson so early on? A 50 euro drone and a firelighter could start this off. France has been plagued by arson attacks on its churches in recent months, including St Sulplice down the road in the 6th.

When he said that bush fires can be prevented by sweeping the forest floor, I guess he was told that airborne water scoops and tankers are used to fight forest fires. He now considers himself an expert on firefighting, having little regard for what a couple of tons of water dropped onto a building would do to it.

Ready to invest millions in some man-made few hundred years ole shit.
But thousands of years old natural land get plowed down as if it was worthless.

Every temple, church and mosque can burn down to ashes for all I care. Plant some trees instead and God (if he is up there ) would be more then happy.

Not worth the cost but could help Macron by easing current French divides.

Good that the statues were removed.

In a late-night press conference, Mr Macron said the fire had burned a "part of us", and made a solemn pledge to rebuild it, with the aid of a fundraising campaign.

French billionaire Bernard Arnault — the chief executive of LVMH, the company that owns Louis Vuitton, among others — offered 200 million euros ($316 million) to help.

Another billionaire, Francois-Henri Pinault — who is in charge of Kering, which owns a number of luxury fashion brands — pledged 100 million euros ($158 million).
"This cathedral will be rebuilt by all of us together. It's part of France's destiny and it will be our project for the years to come. I am committed to this," Mr Macron said.

"Starting [Tuesday], a national fundraising campaign to restore Notre Dame will be launched and this [will spread] beyond our borders.
