Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Monday that her Cabinet had agreed "in principle" upon tighter gun laws for New Zealand.


The proposed changes, to be announced at a future date, were spurred by Friday's Christchurch terror attacks, in which a shooter used multiple weapons, including military-style semi-automatic ones, to open fire on worshippers at two mosques, killing 50.

Speaking at a press conference, Ardern said the attack "has exposed a range of weaknesses in New Zealand's gun laws."

She said her Cabinet had agreed in principle on the gun law reforms to be made, highlighting that the review had come within 72 hours of the attack.

"I will announce a more fulsome set of details once we have worked through the decisions the Cabinet made today," Ardern said, adding that concrete proposals will be announced within 10 days.

Exactly right. It's been mentioned on this thread before. The NRA will be very concerned. Australia's move after the Port Arthur massacre, has been a sore point to the NRA: 23 years since the gun ban and NO mass shooting since! The NRA absolutely hates that statististic, and will hate just as much another Western country reacting sensibly to white supremacist murderousness.
I bet my house that the NRA will be funding some lobbyists in NZ, and I will double down that the NRA will lose their money to a lost cause.

One has displayed courage and fortitude and respect and solace and taken a decisive stand and united the nation.

Pistols and revolvers are illegal now! Only for a very special reason can a licence be obtained for handguns, and it is rare.
