Chelsea Manning: Wikileaks source jailed for refusing to testify

Former US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning has been jailed for refusing to testify before an investigation into Wikileaks.

A Virginia judge ordered her taken into custody until the grand jury's work is finished or she decides to testify.

Manning said she shared everything she knows during her court-martial.

Manning was found guilty in 2013 of charges including espionage for leaking secret military files to Wikileaks, but her sentence was commuted.

Manning, 31, told US District Judge Claude Hilton that she would "accept whatever you bring upon me", but would not testify, the Associated Press reported.

Her lawyers had reportedly asked that she be confined at home due to medical issues, but the judge said US Marshals would address her care needs.

US prosecutors have been investigating Wikileaks for years, and in November, prosecutors inadvertently revealed possible charges against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, in court documents from a separate case.

On Thursday, Manning said in a statement: "I will stand by my principles. I will exhaust every legal remedy available. My legal team will challenge the secrecy of these proceedings and I am prepared to face the consequences of my refusal."

Prosecutor Tracy McCormick said Manning could be freed if she changes her mind and decides to follow the law and testify, according to the Associated Press.

Chelsea Resists!, a group supporting Manning and seeking to raise money for her legal fees, said grand juries were "mired in secrecy, and have historically been used to silence and retaliate against political activists".

"Chelsea gave voluminous testimony during her court martial. She has stood by the truth of her prior statements, and there is no legitimate purpose to having her rehash them before a hostile grand jury."

Manning was arrested in Iraq in 2010 for disclosing more than 700,000 confidential documents, videos and diplomatic cables to the anti-secrecy website.

While Manning said she only did so to spark debates about foreign policy, US officials said the leak put lives at risk.

She was sentenced to 35 years after being found guilty of 20 charges related to the leak, but only served seven before former President Barack Obama commuted her sentence in 2017.

Her sentence was the longest given for a leak in US history, US media reported. Mr Obama said it was "disproportionate" to her crimes.

Republicans criticised the Democratic president's decision at the time.

Then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan said Mr Obama set "a dangerous precedent that those who compromise our national security won't beheld accountable", the New York Times reported.

President Donald Trump has called Manning an "ungrateful traitor" who "should never have been released from prison".

^Lord Haw Haw in denial overdrive.. wants us to focus on the shortage of light bulbs in Venezuelan hospitals.
    ----

Manning should be given a medal for her service for standing up to tyranny, willing to go to jail to protect journalists from being prosecuted by the US all because they exposed US war crimes to the world, namely releasing videos showing the mass murder of journalists, children, civilians etc on the streets of Iraq.

...go back to sleep America, Venezuela, baby incubators, Venezuela, baby incubators, Venezuela, baby incubators Venezuela, baby incubators Venezuela, baby incubators

Didn't he/she/it transform while in prison? I wonder if the army surgeon tasked with chopping its meat and 2 veg off gave it a real saggy fanny so even King Dong couldn't touch the sides.

    And if she doesn't decide?

(luckily, she is not a citizen of country run by a "dictator")

    Some nasty/ignorant/dumb folks on here...

Trying to protect human rights and show citizens the extent of law breaking by the "intelligence community" is a service to society. Far more US citizens are killed by the US government than the total worldwide effort by those who are against the US.

If he/she has already given all known information during the court martial then it's a simple procedure for the US government agencies to communicate and share the required information.

Any government trying to intimidate and bully sources that challenge government accountability, transparency and law abidance is shameful; as is the behaviour of folks who support it.

The investigation into Wikileaks is to why putin stooge Assange deliberately held back emails that would have embarrassed Russia and yet leaked the DNC ones throughout an election campaign.

I doubt Manning can actually offer any useful information on that other than perhaps naming co-conspirators of the blonde rapist.

I used to admire Pilger, but note that in that speech he never mentions Assange doing Putins bidding by leaking those DNC emails.

Had he at least made reference to it, he would have some credibility, but like Fisk, he lets his irrational hatred of all things American blind him.

Pilger doesn't mention it because he knows its an 'off the peg' smear campaign against Assange to distract from US war crimes ...and to send the message to other journalists who might be thinking about stepping out of line.

What kind of "democracy" doesn't have a free press?

Why on earth would John Pilger join in with the US to smear a fellow journalist who delivered one of the biggest whistle blowing scoops against the US government since Watergate?

Pilger is one the most respected journalists in the world with a distinguished career spanning 62 years, covering multiple wars. The fact you have lost respect for him just because he hasn't swallowed the propaganda hook, line and sinker as you obviously have, just means you're a fucking idiot ...you should really be questioning your own understanding not his, but your ego and delusion have overwhelmed you.
    ---------------

Funny how you feign concern for the plight of children in the Venezuela thread over and over, but yet have nothing to say about the video I posted showing the US Apache helicopter crew laughing and joking after mincing a van load of children and their father on the school run in down town Iraq, who committed no crime other to stop and help an injured person in the street.

Although, to say you have nothing to say about US war crimes is not exactly accurate, you actually want to join in and smear the journalist who leaked the video, by repeatedly labelling him the "the blond rapist" even though what he did(based on the testimony of the alleged victims) would never be seen as rape in a million years in any civilised country and it would also make 99% of all men rapists.

    noun: double-think

    • the acceptance of contrary opinions or beliefs at the same time, especially as a result of political indoctrination.
