Jeff Bezos Publishes Emails From National Enquirer Threatening to Leak Salacious Phot

The dispute between Jeff Bezos and the National Enquirer just took an appropriately tabloid-ish turn.

In a detailed essay posted to Medium, the 55-year-old Amazonfounder and owner of The Washington Post alleged that The National Enquirer recently threatened to release racy photos of Bezos and girlfriend Lauren Sanchez. Bezos described the attempt as “extortion and blackmail.”

“I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Bezos wrote. “Or at least that’s what the top people at the National Enquirer thought. I’m glad they thought that, because it emboldened them to put it all in writing.” He added: “I’ve decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten.”

Bezos then printed an email exchange, purportedly from Dylan Howard, an employee at American Media, Inc. (AMI), the company that owns the National Enquirer. In the message, Howard notes the publication had acquired several potentially embarrassing photos of Bezos and Sanchez, including “a full-length scantily-clad body shot [of Bezos] with short trunks” and “a naked selfie in a bathroom—while wearing his wedding ring.”

AMI chairman and CEO David Pecker is a long-time friend of President Donald Trump. Last year, Pecker received immunity for testifying in a federal investigation into his role in payments made to two women who claimed to have had affairs with the president.

Pecker has also sought to forge deep connections with businesses in Saudi Arabia. Bezos said he’d been informed that Pecker was “apoplectic” about the Post‘s recent investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. “We were approached, verbally at first, with an offer,” Bezos wrote. “They said they had more of my text messages and photos that they would publish if we didn’t stop our investigation.”

Instead, Bezos decided to pre-emptively publish descriptions of the embarrassing materials himself.

It’s hard to believe David Pecker would try to extort the world’s richest man over a newspaper investigation of a Saudi journalist.

Something much bigger going on here.

will be interesting to see how mueller and the feds respond to this news....blackmail is a form of extortion and this incident wouldn't be covered under pecker's immunity deal from last year.

And part of that immunity deal is the requirement that they not commit any further illegal acts.
If they do it would void the immunity agreement.
Guess he was convinced bezos wouldn't go public.
    Bad strategy.

    Good on him.

“Of course I don’t want personal photos published, but I also won’t participate in their well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks and corruption,” Mr. Bezos wrote. “I prefer to stand up, roll this log over and see what crawls out.”
    <snip>

The Amazon founder, who at last count was worth $136 billion, suggested that he would spare no expense in taking the fight to the tabloid publisher. Leading the investigation was Gavin de Becker, Mr. Bezos’ longtime security chief, whom Mr. Bezos said he had instructed “to proceed with whatever budget he needed to pursue the facts in this matter.”
    <snip>

That (federal plea) agreement, signed in September, stipulated that A.M.I. “shall commit no crimes whatsoever” for three years, and that if it did, “A.M.I. shall thereafter be subject to prosecution for any federal criminal violation of which this office has knowledge.”

If American Media’s threat to publish the personal photos of Mr. Bezos is determined to have been criminal, it would find its deal with federal prosecutors in jeopardy.
I would love to see Bezos do a Gawker on them.

I wonder who would be angry at Bezos in the government

It's pretty cool that the national enquirer has its hosting on Amazon. I wonder how long that will last?

I recognize the IP address for an AWS Compute Instance on the East coast Datacenter I think

Bezzos is just about to get a huge NSA contract for hosting all NSA/Pentagon servers on the cloud, and why he located his new HQ in Crystal City, the famous neighborhood in DC that host the Pentagon building and other key secret government agencies

Crystal City is a nice place to visit actually, great shopping mall there

they presumed he would fold when they said they had dick pics....but they clearly miscalculated.

bezos is a weird guy and amazon does some highly questionable things, but IMO he should be applauded by everyone for taking a stand on this.

Shocked, I almost expect it. Not that it will lead back to him of course. Which is a shame.

It's very disappointing, he could have a private island populated by dozens of beautiful and submissive young women and he is the very strict king.

for AMI/pecker to attempt to extort the richest man in the world, they must have felt emboldened by past successes extorting very powerful people.

who else has AMI/pecker extorted over the years for trump's benefit?

    lindsey graham, perhaps?

..."BEZOS EXPOSES PECKER"...NY Post, Huffpost Headlines...555...*snigger*...555!...

The Bezos-National Enquirer Story Has *Everything*
It’s enough to bring right and left together, if only for a moment.
    By Mark Gongloff
    February 9, 2019 (Bloomberg)

    Bezos and AMI
Only a story as bananas as the Jeff Bezos-National Enquirer blowup could shock HuffPost and the New York Post onto the same wavelength.

Bezos’s accusation last night that National Enquirer owner American Media Inc. is trying to blackmail him had everything: Extortion, murder, politics, a billionaire’s private parts. It inspired both HuffPost and the elder Post to write the mathematically perfect tabloid headline, which I will not reprint in this wholesome family newsletter. More seriously, this is the latest and weirdest front in a clash of titans pitting the President of the United States against the World’s Richest Man. AMI and its publisher David Pecker were already in trouble for quashing unflattering stories about the president, who in turn routinely bashes Bezos for owning the Washington Post, which routinely makes the president uncomfortable. Also, Saudi Arabia is involved. Like I said, it’s bananas.

It also has some on the left suddenly sympathizing with at least one billionaire, after a week in which the societal value of billionaires has been a topic of debate. There are still plenty of reasons to criticize Bezos and his company, Amazon.com Inc. One is a report in the (Bezos-owned!) Washington Post today that Amazon is huffy about criticisms from New Yorkers (if not saucy New York Post headlines) over its proposed new base in Queens. Sarah Halzack writes Amazon must be careful not to compound the goodwill-destroying nature of its process of making cities genuflect for the privilege of hosting it.

But Bezos, at least, is doing the right thing in standing up to Pecker and the National Enquirer (and, by extension, President Donald Trump), writes Tim O’Brien. Beyond defending himself personally, he’s fighting for some broader principles, including the idea that private messages shouldn’t be stolen and used against you, and maybe also tangentially that legitimate outlets like the Post should be able to cover Trump, Saudi Arabia and others without fear of such recriminations.

    • Federal prosecutors are reviewing the National Enquirer's handling of a story involving Jeff Bezos' affair, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News.
    • Prosecutors are seeking to determine whether the tabloid violated an earlier immunity agreement.
    • American Media, the National Enquirer's parent company, was granted immunity last year in connection with its assistance in an investigation into Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer.
    • That agreement required the company to agree to "commit no crimes whatsoever."
    they're fucked.
