The point is that Venezuela is skint, using its national revenue to pay debt and having to borrow more money.

The russian copy crashed and was withdrawn. It was said because they copied Concorde from intentionally planted false blueprints. But I am not confident this is true.

Nah, it was just a shit attempt at copying as best they could. And it used afterburners apparently, didn't know that. Obviously they couldn't steal the engine design.

Tupolev Tu-144

The Tupolev Tu-144 (Russian: Tyполев Ту-144; NATO reporting name: Charger) is a retired jet airliner and commercial supersonic transport aircraft (SST). It is the first of only two SSTs to enter commercial service, the other being the Anglo-French Concorde.

The design was a product of the Tupolev design bureau, headed by Alexei Tupolev, of the Soviet Union and manufactured by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association in Voronezh, Russia.[1] It conducted 55 passenger service flights, at an average service altitude of 16,000 metres (52,000 ft) and cruised at a speed of around 2,000 kilometres per hour (1,200 mph) (Mach 1.6).[2]

The prototype first flew on 31 December 1968 near Moscow,[1] two months before the first flight of the Concorde. The Tu-144 first went supersonic on 5 June 1969[3] (Concorde first went supersonic on 1 October 1969), and on 26 May 1970 became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach 2.

A Tu-144 crashed in 1973 at the Paris Air Show, delaying its further development. The aircraft was introduced into passenger service on 1 November 1977, almost two years after Concorde, because of budget restrictions. In May 1978, another Tu-144 (an improved version, named Tu-144D) crashed on a test flight while being delivered, and the passenger fleet was permanently grounded after only 55 scheduled flights.

The aircraft remained in use as a cargo aircraft until 1983, by which point a total of 102 commercial flights had been completed. The Tu-144 was later used by the Soviet space program to train pilots of the Buran spacecraft, and by NASA for supersonic research.

The Concorde's Soviet Older Sister That Just Couldn't Stop Crashing

When you think of super sonic flight, you probably first think of the Concorde. But that wasn't the first super sonic transporter and it certainly wasn't the first commercial plane break the sound barrier. Those honors belong to the Tupolev TU-144, the USSR's only super sonic transport.

The Tupolev is one of two super sonic transports (SST) ever built for commercial use—the other being the Concorde. Design began on the soviet jet in 1962 and the first prototype flew on New Year's Eve of 1968 outside Moscow, two months before Concorde got off the ground.

While the Tupolev did closely resemble the Concorde (amid speculation that Soviet espionage was behind the resemblance) the two planes did differ in many technical aspects. The Concorde had better range, braking and engine control but the Tupolev had vastly superior aerodynamics. The Tupolev's wings also included two small retractable canard surfaces—for generating low-speed lift—that the Concorde lacked. It was also generally perceived as less stable in flight, especially at supersonic speeds, than its counterpart.

That instability was made evident in 1973, when its very first production model crashed at the Paris Air show, killing all six crewmen and another eight people on the ground. The cause of the crash remains undetermined, with the French and Russian governments still blaming each other for the plane's failure. The Russians think a mysterious French Mirage fighter jet that appeared to be tailing the TU-144 just before it went down caused the crash. The French have accused the Soviet flight crew of trying to bank the plane too hard.

The TU-144 also proved incredibly unreliable in commercial flight. In just 180 hours of flight time, the first 16 TU-144's suffered more than 226 failures, nearly a third of them in the air. The failures, which spanned from cabin noise to cabin depressurization got so bad that Alexei Tupolev, chief designer of the plane, and two USSR aviation vice-ministers had to personally inspect every TU-144 and issue a joint decision before every flight to determine if the plane was safe to fly that day. Due to these failures and the plane's overall economic infeasibility, production of the TU-144 was cancelled in 1983.

Here's a good side by side comparison that shows how very different they were. The angle of the wings, fuselage shape, suggest it is not simply a rip off of an early concorde design as some seem to insist.

Wearing orange pilot suits and combat helmets, Russian servicemen descended onto the runway where they were eager to present their colleagues with a scaled model of the 'White Swan' bomber, which they had just flown over 10,000 kilometers to reach the Caribbean shores in order to take part in “combined operational flights” with the Venezuelan Air Force.

And Venezuela "will do it with our friends who advocate respect-based relations between states,” Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said after the two bombers, together with An-124 transport and an Il-62 plane, landed in Venezuela.

While the Russian delegation painted their arrival to be a rare friendly visit, the Venezuelan Defence Ministry noted that 'Russia-Venezuela 2018' operational flights will represent a “demonstration of strength.” The training, Caracas maintains, will foster military-technical cooperation and facilitate the exchange of practical experience between the two militaries.
