Manchester man in Egypt 'spying' arrest


A 19-year-old British expat has been arrested in Egypt on suspicion of spying, his family have said.

Muhammad Abul-Kasem, 19, originally from Manchester, was detained in the country on 21 November.

A relative told the BBC he was arrested upon his arrival from Libya after authorities found a photograph of a military aircraft on his mobile phone.

The Foreign Office confirmed a British man had been arrested in the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

Mr Abul-Kasem's family told BBC Asian Network the photograph had been taken through an aeroplane window as it came to land at Alexandria airport.

They said he now faces charges of spying, although no details have been confirmed by Egyptian authorities.

Mr Abul-Kasem had been living in Libya for the past two years, where his father is from, the family said. His mother is from Pakistan.

The Foreign Office said it was seeking more information.

"Our staff are providing assistance to his family," a spokesman said.

Though it is not timed, it should take you approximately 45 minutes to complete the test, but please be aware your session will time out automatically after 90 minutes.NextIf you are successful at this stage, we will invite you to complete and submit our full application form.Full Application formSome of the questions are competency based which allow you to demonstrate the attributes and aptitudes that we consider essential to this role; your answers to these questions will determine whether we think you would be suitable for this unique role. CAIRO — Egyptian authorities arrested a 19-year-old British tourist man over a video he filmed on his cellphone that showed a military helicopter in the background, his family said on Friday.


Libyan-British Muhammed Fathi AbulKasem’s arrest took place shortly after he arrived in Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria on Nov. 21 from neighboring Libya, his cousin Shareen Nawaz said. Egypt’s Foreign Ministry couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. The UK’s Foreign Office confirmed the arrest of a Briton in Alexandria, but didn’t elaborate.

“We didn’t hear from him until 12 hours later,” Nawaz said. “He basically told us he is held on suspicion of collecting information against the military.” He filmed the video while his flight was landing, capturing a military helicopter flying by, she added.

Not a very clever thing for a swarthy arab to do in a arab country....

If he's innocent I'm sure the results of the "interrogation" will convince them.
