^Wondering what "severe punishment" can be exercised...

Incidently, similar case: just watching live from Rome canonizing of Archbishop Oscar Romero who was assassinated some 38 years ago in San Salvador. To date, no one has ever been prosecuted.

The Saudis will continue to deny even in the face of incontrovertible evidence and little will be done by the US or any other country. Way to much downside as the Saudis have the "west" by the balls and they know it. It's all about the money and loss of same, as in the past, will prevent any significant action against the Saudis.

    That's right.

Money talks and all sides know this.

The only remotely 'new' aspect to this is that, with Trump as Pres, pretence to the contrary is less convincing than ever.

Saudi Arabia says will retaliate against any sanctions over Khashoggi case

Saudi Arabia on Sunday warned against threats to punish it over last week’s disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as European leaders piled on pressure and two more U.S. executives scrapped plans to attend a Saudi investor conference.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened “severe punishment” if it turns out Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, though he said Washington would be “punishing” itself if it halted military sales to Riyadh.

“The Kingdom affirms its total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it, whether by threatening to impose economic sanctions, using political pressures, or repeating false accusations,” the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted an unnamed official as saying.

“The Kingdom also affirms that if it receives any action, it will respond with greater action, and that the Kingdom’s economy has an influential and vital role in the global economy,” the official added, without elaborating.

    OIL PRICE WARNING

In a column published just after the SPA statement, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya channel’s General Manager Turki Aldakhil warned that imposing sanctions on the world’s largest oil exporter could spark global economic disaster.

“It would lead to Saudi Arabia’s failure to commit to producing 7.5 million barrels. If the price of oil reaching $80 angered President Trump, no one should rule out the price jumping to $100, or $200, or even double that figure,” he wrote.

maybe the real accusation is Yemen, not the journalists, and US and European governments are getting serious over this, and using the journalist story as leverage

as usual in international politics, the real message is always hidden in media distraction

I don't know, they're facing someone who doesn't blink, and it's not worth trading diplomatic/political/economic blows over.

Baldy orange cunto says in one breath he will punish them and in the other that he still wants the big arms deal.

No prizes for guessing which one wins. Especially if he can wangle a Trump Riyadh out of it.

Saudi will admit that he died under interrogation, and naturally no torture was involved since our mates are ok guys and don't do that sort of thing so it happened through no fault of their own. Then we'll have a brief storm and a flurry of harsh words before being herded once again to hate Russia.

No they won't. If they did, they'd have to produce a body. A body in one piece.

CNN: Saudis preparing to acknowledge journalist Khashoggi died after interrogation 'went wrong'

CNN reported Monday, citing sources, that "Saudis are preparing a report that will acknowledge that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death was the result of an interrogation that went wrong, one that was intended to lead to his abduction from Turkey."

"One source says the report will likely conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency and that those involved will be held responsible," CNN added.
Hours prior, President Trump announced in a tweet that he spoke with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman about Khashoggi.

Trump wrote: “Just spoke to the King of Saudi Arabia who denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened ‘to our Saudi Arabian citizen.’ He said that they are working closely with Turkey to find answer. I am immediately sending our Secretary of State to meet with King!”

In an interview with CBS' '60 Minutes' broadcast the night prior, Trump said of the situation: “There's a lot at stake…We're going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment."

Well... we'll see, "severe punishment" - the threat alone caused reaction

Trump threat sends Saudi stock market tumbling
By Jon Gambrell - Associated Press - Sunday, October 14, 2018 DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The Saudi stock market plunged Sunday after President Donald Trump threatened “severe punishment” over the disappearance of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.
The Tadawul exchange in Riyadh dropped over 6 percent in the week’s first day of trading, with 182 of its 186 listed stocks showing losses by the early afternoon.

If they produced a body it would be on the preconditions that after stitching the bits back on an independent autopsy will find token minor abuse, and then an arms deal makes it all go away.

Hey, what's all this excitement about here ?
Who gives a flying fu..* about this creep ?

If the Saudis are willing and able to do this in another country, just imagine what they do in their own.
I hate to brake it to some numbbrains here....torture and murder in muslim countries is an everyday event.
Objections ? No! I thought so. Let's continue.

O.K. this guy was a man - women are not worth reporting in these countries. Too bad Kashogie was not wearing a veal. Things could have been a lot easier for the Saudis.
O.K. this guy lived in the U.S., if he would have lived in Aishastan no one would have noticed.

Uuuups....I forgot. Women wearing a veal are not allowed to leave their country without their owner. Sorry.

And not so easy as if it would be a consulate of another (e.g. Russian speaking) state. Then it would be very highly likely, the consulate shut down...

How to get out of a diplomatic hole, Saudi style.

1 Blame "renegades" acting on their own
2 Publicly sentence them to life imprisonment
3 Bung the family a wad of cash to shut up
4 Let said renegades out of the back door and pension them off

They certainly won't get into Australia, they're real strict on animal products.
