    GDPR goes live

You may have noticed a huge uptick in emails recently from companies telling you they are changing their T&Cs.

All because of GDPR, new European data protection legislation that comes into force today.

A lot of US sites are panicking, e.g. the LA Times:

Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries. We are engaged on the issue and committed to looking at options that support our full range of digital offerings to the EU market. We continue to identify technical compliance solutions that will provide all readers with our award-winning journalism.
Can't blame them, the fines for not properly managing data of European citizens are up to 20 million euros or 4% of turnover.

So if you find sites suddenly blocked from the UK today, that's why.

completely pointless, and the funny thing is there is no way to "enforce" the legislation, so it will be back to normal for GAFA in a few months

too complex, too easy to dodge, and people too stupid to care

GDPR kicked in yesterday, and NOYB.EU have already filed proceedings against Google France (e3.4bn), Instagram Belgium (e1.3bn), WhatsAp Hamburg (1.3bn) and Facebook Austria (e1.3bn).

Looks like the lawyers (and no doubt a few enterprising politicians) will be lining up at the petty cash trough.

Facebook and Google may be fined BILLIONS for 'ignoring GDPR rules' | Daily Mail Online

DM, but they don't have the imagination to make it up, probably copied it from a more respectable source if there are any left.
