I cycled the south coast of France in my 20's.
My (then) Finnish gf and I started and ended in Marseilles.
It may have changed over the decades but it felt more like what I image the slums of Morocco are like.
Amongst the Port areas, where groups of ethnic North Africans gather in force was quite intimidating for
a blond Finnish Lassie.
From my one off experiences (we cycled from Marseilles to the Italian Border, up the range then inland back
to Marseilles) the south coast of France is a 'must do' ... but Marseilles is/was (relatively) a cesspit of humanity.
