Yemen conflict: US cuts arms sales to Saudi Arabia

The US has said it will limit arms sales to Saudi Arabia amid concerns over civilian casualties linked to air strikes in Yemen.

Precision-guided weapons will no longer be delivered, a Pentagon official said.

President Barack Obama's administration said it was concerned over "flaws" in the way air strikes are targeted in Yemen.

In October, more than 140 people were killed in a strike on a funeral in the country.

A Saudi-led coalition, which is attempting to support the elected government against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, was blamed for the attack.

White House National Security Council spokesman Ned Price later warned Saudi Arabia that US security co-operation was "not a blank cheque".

But while some sales are being scaled back, the US said it will continue to provide Saudi Arabia with intelligence focused on border security.

It will also provide training for pilots involved in the Saudi-led air campaign, to avoid civilian casualties wherever possible, the official said.

Other contracts are expected to go ahead such as a deal worth more than $3bn (£2.4bn) to supply military helicopters.

The Saudi-led coalition is fighting the Houthi rebel movement in Yemen.

Thousands of civilians have been killed and nearly three million people have been displaced in the country, one of the region's poorest, since the war began in 2014.

The Houthis took the capital Sanaa, forcing Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi's government to flee. Some ministers have since returned to the city of Aden.

Saudi Arabia has denied causing large-scale civilian deaths, saying it is making every effort to avoid hitting civilian targets.

That's OK- the UK will fill the gap.

Are you aware ent, (much to your chagrin), that the Iranian's are winning? Betta get used to the new deal. They are smart people- and have been forever.

It's all to bluff the public that Saudi is being punished, but if Saudi needed those extra arms the U.S could provide them in a blink of an eye.

You wouldn't require allies in the region if you minded your own business.

OK boys ameristan has no idea what the Saudis do with the weapons they supply.

Most of the "aid" is non-lethal allegedly. For example ameristan only supplies fuel at 10,000m - no comment on what the planes they refuel are up to. Another example is providing targeting for Saudi planes - no comment on what the Saudis do once they have been given the targets.

UK is similar but of course the limit of their technical advice is ensuring the Saudis are accurate when they utilise the explosives supplied by the UK.

Plenty of factual evidence that civilians, men, women and children, are being massacred by the Saudi unelected barbaric regime.

Army General admits US does not track weapons used to bomb Yemeni civilians

"US Army General Joseph Votel admitted that the US does not monitor how the weapons it supplies to Saudi Arabia are used in Yemen. Over 10,000 Yemeni civilians have died in the conflict since 2015.

During a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) asked Votel, head of the US Central Command, whether Centcom tracks the purpose of the Saudi missions it refuels in Yemen.

    “We do not,” Votel said.

Warren drew attention to the recent spate of civilian casualties in Yemen as a result of Saudi airstrikes against the region. She asked whether Centcom is able to ascertain whether US fuel or munitions were used as part of Saudi strikes that killed civilians.

“I don’t believe we are,” Votel said."

When will the smirking slayer demand the Saudis stop the genocide or face ameristan military action?

And pray tell where does "ameristan" get this fuel from then OhOh? And why do the Saudis need to go to "ameristan" to get fuel?

The origin of the aviation fuel is not the issue, the "assistance" to deliver at 10,000m is the key 'arry.

I am presuming SA has the ability to convert crude oil to aviation fuel in house, but I maybe wrong. In-flight refuelling I suspect is not an in house asset.

As for any other "fuel" enabling SA to slaughter men, woman, and children at will, they are gifted this in exchange for bribes from many bankrupt countries around the world. As illustrated some of those suppliers purport to have systems in place that ensure the human rights they "hold dearly" as the bedrocks of their society remain unblemished.

So it's a bit like blaming the petrol station for the car bomber then.

    No.

    1. Selling petrol to Joe Public has it's risks - traffic accidents, cutting ones leg off with a chain saw..... - No Self Inflicted

    2. Selling petrol to a known terrorist has it's risks - driving to the latest throat slitting party ...... - Yes. This could be stopped if they were known and identified by wearing a black headband/spot tattooed on their forehead which the petrol station attendent acted upon. But how many throats are slit at your average party, hence the lower risk.

    3. Selling petrol to a terrorist, who is driving a car packed with explosives to kill people - 100 x Yes. As No.2 but affecting more innocent people's lives destroyed, hence the higher risk

As you suggest, have clarity helps one produce the best results in all situations.

As usual you have difficult in your reasoning.

ameristan and the UK, plus others, sell deadly material or provide deadly assistance whilst suggesting to the world, that what they them as describe as "non-leathal" and hide behind their "impeccable" human rights standards. Even more so they accuse others of having no or lower standards than themselves.

Some like you actually believe their pork pies.

The same moral British and Western media have done the same with gasoline sales in the 80's to the ANC who's Winnie Mandela endorsed the placining of a cars tyre around a victims body , and the inside of the tyre is swimming in petrol, and they are burnt to death in front of a internationally media supported crowd portrayed as nice Sowetens just using gasoline to " Liberate" themselves .

    Still a yes then.

My but your local newsagent must get shit from you for selling newspapers that state that Iran is fighting a proxy war in Yemen to destabilise the Middle East in favour of another "Islamic Revolution".

And it's all his fault for selling the newspapers, eh?
