Terror attack on French embassy and army HQ

An attack was launched in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

A TERROR attack was launched on a French embassy and army headquarters, with witnesses reporting hearing gunfire, men storming a building and a huge explosion that send plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

People said armed men got out of a car and began opening fire in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, this morning. The city mayor said this afternoon the incident was a terror attack carried out by "jihadists".
Police said later they had killed four of the gunmen, but a special forces operation was still underway.
France’s embassy confirmed in a statement it was under attack along with a cultural centre and the army headquarters.

In a post on Facebook, it said: "Attack under way at the French Embassy and French Institute. Stay hidden where you are.”

A witness said smaller explosions came from the army headquarters after a first larger blast, masked gunmen had stormed in and security forces were converging on the scene. Pictures from the scene showed windows blown out by the blasts and cars covered in debris as smoke filled the air.

Police said security units were deployed to the scene and urged people to stay away from that area.
The US Embassy tweeted: “@Usembassyouaga has received reports of gunfire in downtown Ouagadougou.
“Avoid the area of downtown Ouagadougou. Seek secure shelter. Monitor local media for updates.
“Check back here for more updates from the embassy.”

France's ambassador to West Africa's Sahel region described the incident as a terror attack.
Jean-Marc Châtaigner said: "Terrorist attack this morning in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso: solidarity with colleagues and Burkinabe friends.”

France's President Emmanuel Macron is being kept up to date with events in the Burkina Faso capital after gunmen launched an attack in the centre of the city in the vicinity of the French Embassy, the Elysee Palace said.
The Elysee statement urged French nationals to follow alerts from the embassy. Burkina Faso, like other countries in West Africa, has been targeted sporadically by jihadist groups operating across Africa's Sahel region.
Suspected jihadists killed at least 18 people last August during a raid on a restaurant in Ouagadougou and militants have targeted be security forces along its remote northern border region with Mali.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for an attack on a restaurant and hotel in Ouagadougou in January 2016 in which 30 people were killed. Five regional countries launched a new taskforce last year to tackle Islamist militants in the zone, to which international donors have committed a half-billion dollars.

Froggycide,, hammered by Krauts, Poms and Thais you'd think they'd had enough of Africa after betraying the pieds-noirs.

One of the few armed nations to ever surrender to the might of the Italians

At least 30 dead as French embassy comes under attack in Burkina Faso

    The Telegraph
    David Chazan, paris
    2 MARCH 2018

About 30 people were killed and 85 wounded in terrorist attacks on the French embassy and cultural centre in Burkina Faso and the west African country’s army headquarters on Friday.

Most of the dead were Burkina Faso soldiers, killed as they defended the targets in the capital, Ouagadougou, supported by French forces. There were no French casualties, security sources in Paris said.

It was not immediately clear how many gunmen took part in what are believed to have been coordinated strikes described by Edouard Philippe, the French prime minister, as "a terrorist attack". At least six assailants are known to have been killed.

The bloodshed began when five of the gunmen jumped out of a pickup truck in the city centre, shouted “Allahu Akhbar” (‘God is greatest’ in Arabic), set fire to the truck and opened fire on passers-by. They then ran towards the French embassy, according to witnesses who saw the attack from the state television offices facing the embassy.

Around the same time, at least one explosion occurred near the army headquarters and the French cultural centre, located about half a mile from the embassy.

Witnesses said five armed men got out of a car and opened fire on passersby before heading towards the embassy.

Moussa Korbeogo, a market trader, told the AP news agency that gunmen also arrived there in a pickup and started shooting at soldiers. “Some of the soldiers ran into a nearby bank to seek shelter. Several were killed outside and inside the premises,” he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. A 2016 attack in the city was claimed by al-Qaeda which said it was a reprisal for Burkina Faso’s participation in a regional military campaign against Islamists. Thirty people including six Canadians and five Europeans were killed in a subsequent attack on a Ouagadougou restaurant last year.

France, the former colonial power, has deployed 4,000 troops to fight jihadists in the impoverished Sahel region on the southern rim of the Sahara alongside soldiers from Burkina Faso and four other west African countries. The UN also has a 12,000-strong peacekeeping force based in neighbouring Mali.

The Islamist insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and forced tens of thousands of people to flee from their homes.

Burkina Faso is notoriously unstable and its long-serving president was ousted in an uprising in 2014.

A video was released on Friday of a 75-year-old French woman abducted in Mali in 2016 and believed to be held by an al-Qaeda affiliate. Sophie Pétronin, an aid worker, appeared to be in poor health.

Speaking in Nice, Edouard Philippe, the French prime minister, said: “This was a terrorist attack and the French embassy was among the targets.”

Not real Muslims responsible again then, that's a relief I was beginning to think ISLAM was a vicious terrorist based religion whose founder was misunderstood when he said he was victorious by terror.
