Elon Musk Just Sent His Tesla to Space

By DANA HULL / BLOOMBERG February 6, 2018

Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its new Falcon Heavy rocket for the first time Tuesday, a major milestone in the company’s quest to grow its customer base and fund its vision of making life multiplanetary.
With fans gathered along the Florida space coast and millions watching on webcast, the new rocket rumbled to life shortly after 3:45 p.m. local time. It cleared the launch pad without blowing up — a feat Chief Executive Officer Musk said would signal a win — and continued on in an attempt to deliver its test payload into an Earth-Mars elliptical orbit around the sun.

Falcon Heavy is a large, reusable launch vehicle that will allow the closely held company to bid on heavier payloads than it can with its Falcon 9, such as big commercial satellites and national security missions.

Following the launch, SpaceX did something never before seen in space history: It re-landed multiple rocket cores back on earth. Two touched down on land, and the plan for the third was for it to settle back on an unmanned drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The video feed on the drone ship cut out before the company could confirm whether it landed successfully.

The Hawthorne, California-based company already has paying customers committed to flying with Falcon Heavy, including commercial satellite operators Arabsat, Inmarsat and Viasat, according to its launch manifest. The U.S. Air Force also chose Falcon Heavy for its STP-2, or Space Test Program 2, mission, though it still needs to go through certification.

The payload for Tuesday’s maiden flight was Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster sports car, outfitted with cameras to capture the views. A nearly indestructible disk carrying a digital copy of Isaac Asimov’s science fiction book series, Foundation, is also on board, plus a plaque engraved with 6,000 SpaceX employees names.

    Can't say that I do.

I think he's brilliant. And in 100 years will be remembered as one of the greats that changed the World and humanity.

I hope he has a long life, as we could do with another 3 decades of him putting his money where his mind is, for the sake of humanity.

The underlined part is up for debate.

It has been widely reported that among SolarCity, Tesla, and the rocket company SpaceX, Elon Musk’s confederacy of interests has gotten at least $4.9 billion in taxpayer support over the past 10 years.

This is almost half of Musk’s supposed net worth—taken from the pockets of American citizens and put into companies that can survive only by cannibalizing each other, spending without end, and promising that success is always just beyond the horizon and yet never arrives.

The American people are being taken on a ride by SolarCity, Tesla, and Musk. The ride is fueled by a cult of personality in Musk. And it costs billions of taxpayer dollars as he promises us not only the moon, but to harness the power of the sun and send us all to Mars.

One thing I would have done differently, however.

I would have changed 'Don't Panic' to 'I told you to turn left!'.

Cheers, just watched it beat an Aventador SV in a 1/4 mile drag race.

This is the electric Rimac that almost killed the Hamster.

If Tesla do a supercar it will be beyond what the H2 did for Superbikes.

The part I underlined("his money") followed by the quote should clear that up.

Any Aussies figured out how many of their tax dollars are going towards Musk's Oz battery project?

    These are much reported lies.

True that Tesla got government money in the finance crisis like all the other car companies. Tesla was the first to repay it in full. Did GM ever repay?

SpaceX got some NASA funding for developing the Dragon spacecraft. But the overall contract was for delivering cargo to the ISS and SpaceX did that at rock bottom prices compared to the competition.

Similar the Crew Dragon. SpaceX got NASA funding for developing a capability NASA needs. They do it much cheaper than their competition Boeing. Hard to construct that as government subsidy. Though some people try. Elon Musk is well hated by the alt right. Which is a good sign.

You clearly don't understand how successful the Tesla project has been for Australia.

It's been a massive benefit for consumers and the only people hurting are the gas companies that routinely overcharged.

The difference in January was that there is a new player in the market: Tesla. The company’s big battery, officially known as the Hornsdale Power Reserve, bid into the market to ensure that prices stayed reasonable, as predicted last year.
Rather than jumping up to prices of around $11,500 and $14,000/MW, the bidding of the Tesla big battery – and, in a major new development, the adjoining Hornsdale windfarm – helped (after an initial spike) to keep them at around $270/MW.
This saved several million dollars in FCAS charges, which are paid by other generators and big energy users, in a single day.
And that’s not the only impact. According to state government’s advisor, Frontier Economics, the average price of FCAS fell by around 75% in December from the same month the previous year. Market players are delighted, and consumers should be too, because they will ultimately benefit.

Showboating or not, it’s impressing enough people that it quite apparently created a snowball effect for Tesla’s Powerpacks.
Now, this incredible use of the system is really specific to the Australian energy market and there aren’t that many markets out there where it could be so valuable, but they can certainly adapt it at different scales and for different uses.
But in Australia alone, it resulted in several more projects in the works. Tesla was chosen to build another big battery in Australia earlier this month and the company is also working with Neoen in the country for potentially even larger battery projects.

Brilliant video thanks. I watch a lot of Top Gear and it always cheers me up. The Trio now have their own live stream on YouTube where they mingle with Joe public car enthusiasts.

alt right is like a kraken. Their tentacles are spreading out. Also SpaceX and Tesla are both up against powerful and well entrenched interests. They can not compete on technical competence so they compete on political power games. Almost always the accusations are provable and proven wrong yet they keep getting repeated.

The most absurd wrong statements are brought up by Congress members in Congress hearings. Like stating that SpaceX has problems with fire in the engine compartments when it is a well known and well controlled matter of air recirculation during ascent.

Like bringing up burning batteries when statistically the batteries of Tesla cars burn less frequently than gasoline tanks in conventional cars and then only in major accidents.

That's because they are on the big oil payroll and have instructions to protect the gasoline industry.
