    False Alarm in Hawaii

Hawaii false alarm sparks panic, confusion

A false emergency alert warning of an incoming ballistic missile caused massive panic in Hawaii on Saturday, as terrified people scrambled to find shelter and prepared for what they thought might be their final moments.

U.S. and state officials worked hurriedly to recall the mobile alert and assure residents that there was no missile rocketing toward the islands.

    But for nearly 40 minutes,
panic and confusion overtook a state already on edge as a result of boiling tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

Social media users shared their experiences and confusion online. Some said they
sent final goodbyes and "I love yous" to family and friends before finding the alert was a mistake.

"This is a real threat facing Hawaii, so people got this message on their phones and they thought: 15 minutes, we have 15 minutes before me and my family could be dead," Rep.
    Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) told CNN.

The alert spread quickly across the state. Not only did it appear on mobile devices, it was broadcast on television and radio and appeared on electronic road signs as people tried to find shelter.

    Hawaii issues Missile Warning Alert

An early-morning emergency alert mistakenly warning of an incoming ballistic missile attack was dispatched to cellphones across Hawaii on Saturday, setting off widespread panic in a state that was already on edge because of escalating tensions between the United States and North Korea.
The alert, sent by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, was revoked 38 minutes after it was issued, prompting confusion over why it was released — and why it took so long to rescind. State officials and residents of a normally tranquil part of the Pacific, as well as tourists swept up in the panic, immediately expressed outrage.
“What happened today was totally unacceptable,” said Gov. David Y. Ige. “Many in our community were deeply affected by this. I am sorry for that pain and confusion that anyone might have experienced.”
Officials said the alert was the result of human error and not the work of hackers or a foreign government. The mistake occurred during a shift-change drill that takes place three times a day at the emergency command post, according to Richard Rapoza, a spokesman for the agency.
“Someone clicked the wrong thing on the computer,” he said.

Fat Boy has no intention of sending a missile anywhere near America or anywhere else. He lives in a weird world but he is not an idiot.

Yeah because I think you'd pick a state like Hawaii (pop. 1.4 million) to do that eh? Fuck me, that will swing public opinion.

    Indeed.
Plus all the negative "humanitarian" stories in the media. Orphans, homeless old people, mistreated soldiers, evil fat boy and so on.

It is exactly where they would pick - a place synonymous with an attack on the USA triggering the USA going to war. The dumbed down masses wouldn't see the significance - funny that you don't.

It's normal to merge threads covering exactly the same subjects, happens all the time in news. When threads are merged the posts are inserted in chronological order but the title of the thread being merged into remains.

I understand that. But it seems to me the first OP on the subject should get the thread title, no? Even though it was placed in the wrong sub-forum originally.

^^Maybe - but harry's title makes more sense. "False Alarm in Hawaii" is fairly meaningless while "Hawaii issues Missile warning Alert" tells you exactly what the story's about.
