A student took a train from Scotland to England just to buy cider — because it was £20 cheaper. Liam Howie traveled 112 miles from Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, and back, to purchase eight litres of various drinks for just £10.37 last week. Man collects luggage after stag do and finds all his clothes torn to shreds He claims it would have cost him £30 north of the border, because of the introduction of the Minimum Unit Pricing Law in May. Writing for student news site The Tab, the University of Edinburgh student said: ‘A bottle of Frosty Jack’s now costs £11.25 in Scotland, whereas you can still pay a measly £3.69 for the very same product in England. ‘We decided to take advantage of this unbelievable discovery, so hopped on the train down to the nearest English town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. ‘I’d heard the stories about how cheap it was south of the border, but you can never quite comprehend the sweet, sweet deals until you’re stood in the shop, staring the deals right in the face. The student insists it was cheaper to pop on the train to get booze 56 miles away than buy it in Scotland (Picture: The Tab) ‘B&M were selling 2 litres of Strongbow for a teeny £2.99. I bought myself a bottle of the infamous Frosty Jack’s, along with a bottle of Blackthorn Reserve, so I had a bit of variety. ‘I had managed to buy eight litres of cider for just £10.37, which in Scotland would have cost me somewhere in the region of £30. If I’d bought two more bottles of Frosty Jack’s, I’d have spent £17.75 on alcohol, which would have cost me around £47 in Scotland.’

That reminds me of the dour Scotsman who walked into a pharmacist shop, threw a used condom down onto the counter and asked if the pharmacist does repairs.

I wondered about this, because about seven years ago I paid about £14 to get all the way from London St. Pancras to Waverly St. Edinburgh.

Sure enough, Edinburgh to Berwick Upon Tweed is £12 return.

I suspect that in future Billy Bunter will have to continue to spend his days between Edinburgh and Berwick to feed his Frosty Jack addiction. Given the new price in Scotland, Frosty will soon disappear from the shelves as nobody will be buying it.

You've obviously not been a penny strapped UK student and are not aware of how to manage finding cheap tickets on UK railways.

This evenings price is £7.50 return. Three provisos:

1. Pay for the ticket 24 hours in advance.
2. Have a Rail Card. This price is for a 16 to 24 year old person Rail Card.
3. Only travel on the preselected train.

I was chatting online to a mate of mine who used to live on Phuket. He now manages a hotel in Jockland. I asked him how the new ruling was hitting him and he replied that it was not... they just order over Amazon now and get the UK price.

If you had read post #15 you will see that the, "advance" ticket price, was for the next day's travel, not "weeks in advance". Click on the link and try for yourself.

None of us know, for certain, what "he did" or didn't actually do. What we do know is that the OP's assumption is "highly unlikely" to be true, as cheap fares are available, if you meet the criteria.
