Texas church shooting leaves at least 26 dead

BY CAROLINE ON 6 NOVEMBER 2017

A lone gunman has opened fire in a Baptist church in the US state of Texas killing more than two dozen people, including the 14-year-old daughter of the church pastor. The shooter has reportedly been “taken down.”
A shooting at a church in a southern Texas town has killed at least 26 people, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed late Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference, Abbott said the attack at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, located around 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio, was the “largest mass shooting in the state’s history.”

    Shot during Sunday service

The lone gunman walked into the church while the morning service was in progress, armed with what police said appeared to be an assault rifle. Dressed entirely in black, tactical-type gear and wearing a ballistic vest, he then opened fire on the worshippers, who authorities said were aged from 5 to 72.

Police have described the shooter as a white male in his mid-20s, without identifying him further. The Associated Press, citing two anonymous officials, later named him as Devin Kelley who lived in a suburb of San Antonio.
Twenty others were wounded in the atrocity, Wilson County commissioner Albert Gamez told cable news outlets earlier.
Freeman Martin, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told the press conference it was unknown whether the shooter killed himself or was shot dead by a local resident who had engaged him in the church and then pursued him by car. Martin said police did not shoot the gunman.

    Pastor’s daughter among dead

The dead include the 14-year-old daughter of Pastor Frank Pomeroy, the church leader told ABC News. He said he and his wife Sherri were out of town and not at the church service.

“We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends,” Sherri Pomeroy wrote in a text message to The Associated Press.
“Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the Charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as I can.”
Witnesses said the morning church service is usually attended by some 50 people.
Emergency personnel quickly rushed to the scene, with some victims evacuated by helicopter.
Max Massey, a reporter for San Antonio’s local news channel KSAT, said Sutherland Springs residents have gathered at the town’s community building awaiting news about their loved ones.

    Trump ‘monitoring’ the situation

Speaking from his 12-day trip to Asia, US President Donald Trump described the shootings as an “act of evil” in a “place of sacred worship.”
“Our hearts are broken but in dark times — and these are dark times — such as these, Americans do what they do best,” he said.
On Sunday evening hundreds of people, including Gov. Abbott, gathered outside the church for a prayer vigil.
The mass shooting comes just over a month after a gunman in Las Vegas fired down from a hotel room on a concert crowd, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds more.
The shootings quickly reignited a decades-long national debate over whether easy access to firearms was contributing to more atrocities.
Among those to comment on social media was Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who said: “How many more people must die at churches or concerts or schools before we stop letting the @NRA control this country’s gun policies?”

Don't worry Senator. Your orange leader is urging people to pray. That will conquer the evil.
That the victims were praying at the time they were shot does nothing to detract from the power of prayer for the survivors.
It has also been suggested that more concealed carry permits may have prevented this, so perhaps, Senator, you should be advocating for the NRA instead of your senseless criticism.
Betsy Devos wants guns in schools to protect against grizzly bears, which is a super idea, and further to that, if every student carried a gun, even to church, the shooter may have been shot before he could do anything.

Not sure why this nonsense belongs in the News thread given the slaughter of innocent civilians by American retards through gunplay is a national sport and quite routine.

The particularly amusing aspect of this latest demonstration of American imbecility is that the victims got wasted in church praying to their God. Presumably the surviving relatives will construe some "special" message from their deity........." Yessirreee, the good Lord has taken them earlier than they thought but they're going to a better place" ....or......" The good Lord is punishing us for our weakness and it's our moral duty to fight for him but with bigger and more weapons ".

Yeah, barely raises an eyebrow nowadays.

the only good news is that the NRA is safe, because someone in the church used his gun to shoot back, and killed the shooter

    And, inevitably, a quote from the moron-in-chief;

“We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries, but this isn’t a guns situation … we could go into it but it’s a little bit soon to go into it. Fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction, otherwise it wouldn’t have been as bad as it was, it would have been much worse."

Just what I expect from churches. The Bible-babblers won't be satisfied until they kill each other off.

No, American cops save the shooting option for black motorists that they pull over for speeding or having an improper tail-light.

It seems my lampooning of dopey American christian zealotry was indeed beyond parody - the Texican Attorney General has just pronounced folk attending their church congregations should carry more guns.

be that as it may, but you cant deny that had there been one or two tooled up god botherers in the congregation, then the death toll might not have been so high.

yes - those gunslingers could have randomly shot through the walls of the church - a little bit of trigonometry vis a vis the bulletholes in the walls and the dead people and they could have shot back in the vague direction

And just like Vegas, nothing will change and it will drop out of the news in a few days. Trump already said "it wasn't a gun thing", so end of.
