Madagascar village 'hit by bubonic plague'

A village in Madagascar has been hit by a deadly outbreak of the bubonic plague, medical experts on the island have confirmed.
Test were carried out after at least 20 people in the village, near the north-western town of Mandritsara, were reported to have died last week.
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned in October that Madagascar was at risk of a plague epidemic.
The disease is transmitted to humans via fleas, usually from rats.

Bubonic plague, known as the Black Death when it killed an estimated 25 million people in Europe during the Middle Ages, is now rare.
Last year, Madagascar had 60 deaths from the plague, the world's highest recorded number.
The Pasteur Institute of Madagascar confirmed on Tuesday that tests taken from bodies in the village last week showed that they had died of the bubonic plague.
The BBC's Tim Healy in the capital, Antananarivo, says health officials have now gone to the remote area to investigate.
Prisoners on the island are usually most affected by the plague, which is spread because of unhygienic conditions, he says.
The prevalence of rats in Madagascar's prisons means the plague can spread easily.
The Pasteur Institute said there were concerns that the disease could spread to towns and cities where living standards have declined since a coup in 2009 and the ensuing political crisis.
On 20 December a second round is being held of presidential elections aimed at ending the political deadlock.

Unfortunately there's nothing that unusual about this. Plague has a good animal reservoir to survive in... in many countries including the US, so smallpox/polio eradication isn't a starter.

United States Ranks 11th in Plague Cases Worldwide

I believe cases of bubonic any where would be relevant to this story, as even today this deadly nasty still strives and mutated strains have been known.

There are ten other Countries with higher instances of the Plague though, and I wondered why he highlighted USAs statistics and not the other Countries .

Remember when we talked about failed capitalist states? Something like this doesn't happen in Cuba, not even Vietnam. US ranks 11th out of 200+ countries? That's not too bad.

I imagine that the plague doesn't concern itself within political parameters.

It just is - and evolves.

The plague can be easily cured with antibiotics nowadays, and flees and rats eradicated during an outbreak. Not political parameters directly, but they come with good or poor healthcare systems. They're always reasonably good in communist countries, it's high on the agenda.

Thats because you you prefer the confidence of the ignorent to real knowledge. If you had bothered to read more than the links title you would have discovered that the artical was more about the present widespread issue of this disease more associated with medivil europe than today. Thats why I linked it.... being an americal newpaper for a predominantly American audience its hardly surprising that the sys candy mentions America.... I belive its a common technique to get the determinedly ignorant to read more than the title.

A bit more serious than originally reported

Eighty-six people have been inflicted by the plague, of which 39 have died,” said the ministry in a statement read to AFP. A doctor in the ministry in Antananarivo said 90 percent of the cases were diagnosed as pneumonic plague, a vicious strain, which can kill within three days, leaving little time for antibiotics to work.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonic_plague

Typically, pneumonic form is due to a spread from infection of an initial bubonic form. Primary pneumonic plague results from inhalation of fine infective droplets and can be transmitted from human to human without involvement of fleas or animals.
Pneumonic plague can be caused in two ways: primary, which results from the inhalation of aerosolised plague bacteria, or secondary, when septicemic plague spreads into lung tissue from the bloodstream. Pneumonic plague is not exclusively vector-borne like bubonic plague; instead it can be spread from person to person. There have been cases of pneumonic plague resulting from the dissection or handling of contaminated animal tissue. This is one type of the formerly known Black Death.[1] It could kill 90%–95% of a population if the victims cough and pass on the bacteria.
    don't cough on me

    and for flake

On November 2, 2007, wildlife biologist Eric York died of pneumonic plague in Grand Canyon National Park. York was exposed to the bacteria while conducting a necropsy on a mountain lion carcass

now it has hit english news - waiting for it to be picked up by more international press - they like the Plague attention

need to time a message to my mum before she sees some news broadcast and panics - and tell her I am not dead yet

Pneumonic plague has killed five people in Madagascar since August, a top health official told AFP on Thursday, but stressed the situation was under control.

"We have detected 22 suspected cases of pneumonic plague, including five deaths," said senior health ministry official Willy Randriamarotia.

"There have been no deaths since Monday," he said, adding that there was widespread panic in the eastern region of Tamatave "which has not seen the plague for 100 years."

Plague killed millions of people across the world in earlier centuries.

The first death in Madagascar's recent outbreak came on August 28 when a passenger in a bush taxi died en route to Tamatave.

Two others who came in contact with the passenger also died, while two more people succumbed to the disease in the province of Antananarivo.

About 300 people have been treated so far for plague, the health ministry said.

There have been outbreaks every year in Madagascar since 1980, especially fuelled by rats fleeing forest fires.

Plague can be cured with antibiotics, but can be fatal within 24 hours if it affects the lungs.

The high incidence of the plague in the country has been attributed to a combination of factors, including poor hygiene and insufficient healthcare.
Five die as plague resurfaces in Madagascar | News24

the following was the advisory I recieved yesterday

We received the following information at a briefing held by the Madagascar Department of Health yesterday afternoon. There we 5 fatalities in total, all had face to face direct contact with the index case.

Only two of the cases demised in Toamasina.

5 close contacts were identified, isolated and all received post exposure prophylaxis and remain in a stable condition.

The Health Authorities emphasized that Toamasina is not an endemic area and that the cases were “imported” from a different region. All cases seem to have been Pneumonic Plague and therefore transmitted by coughing and droplet spread.

Contact tracing has been conducted and contacts isolated and treated. As such, the situation seems to be contained and there have been no further cases reported.
