Winds down to 155 and called a Cat 4 now...Irma still has to contend with Cuba's land/mountains. But also going into even warmer water.

Last update sez Irma is moving straight west now...right at Cuba.

It's really gonna be kind of funny, after all the Fla hype and hullabaloo, if Irma goes over Cuba and out into the Gulf.

Not so funny for Cuba though.

^ Obviously getting that from your tin foil nonsense sites. I am watching the weather channel right now and they it is moving exactly as the weather service projected.

Red sent for the fake news.

Hurricane Irma forecast to strike Florida Keys as Category 5: Nowhere 'will be safe'

Hurricane Irma is now forecast to hit the Florida Keys as a Category 5 storm.

Meteorologists expect Irma to make landfall in the Keys between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. ET on Sunday. Overnight projections of Irma's path showed less of a threat to the Carolinas as the monster storm appeared likely to move directly up the middle of Florida and curve inland.

The National Weather Service's Key West office issued a dire warning in the wake of the updated forecast.

5.6M asked to evacuate in Florida ahead of Irma

More than 5 million people have been asked to evacuate in Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma, which is expected to make landfall this weekend.

The Associated Press reported Friday night that 5.6 million people – or more than a quarter of the state's population – have been asked to evacuate as the Category 4 storm approaches the U.S.

Authorities in southern Florida have been warning residents for days about the approaching storm, which is expected to bring winds topping 155 miles per hour.

Evacuations are underway in the Miami-Dade area, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) earlier Friday warned that "all Floridians should be prepared to evacuate."

"Do not put yourself or your family at risk," Scott said.

Talked to my father this morning saying I-75 is packed with cars now around middle Georgia. They are expecting Irma to be a tropical storm by the time she reaches the Florida-Georgia line.

I've seen the BBC article and vid (on BBC site) of the devastation brought by Irma to Barbuda. Terrible loss.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst re: Cuba or Florida. A cat 4 storm is no joke.

I experienced Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013 and Glenda in 2014. Both prolly cat3 in my area, but cat4 in the "eye". Very strong rain & wind (and I'm not easily impressed re: these bcos I grew up with them). Know of some friends of friends who lost lives & properties due to Haiyan.

Hope the ppl on the path of Irma evacuate & keep safe. There was also a mag 8.1/8.2 earthquake in Mexico last night. Hope the place recovers.

My family hasn't been able to use I75 northbound for days, south of Tampa.

They are all staying. They managed to get 55 extra gallons of diesel for the generators & bought 2 new window units last season so they should be comfortable.

Hopefully it doesn't push anymore to the west. Flooding will be a bitch.

    What's a 'window unit'?

Well I don't know how having two new window units is going to help in a typhoon.

    Yall need jesus

House has central air, and when the power is out, after a hurricane, you can put a window unit in the window in bedrooms, running off the generator, and sleep comfortably.

FYI nothing much you can do during a hurricane.

Its after when you need the fuel, water, food, and air-conditioning.

If theres lots of flooding and standing water for a while the mosquitoes will be savage so unless you wanna go full cave-man, A/C is a must.

Judging from the times they've predicted for landfall, could be a whole lotta people spending the hurricane trapped in their cars on 75.

23 thousand people are in shelters in Miami-Dade County

Mayor Carlos Gimenez said 23 thousand people are currently in shelters in the county ahead of Hurricane Irma. He said the county has the capacity to house 100,000 in shelters during this emergency.

Miami-Dade has 43 shelters operating, seven are at capacity or closed, the mayor said tonight at a news conference.
