My son is just back in Thailand after an 8 month stint on a cruise ship sailing between Florida and all those Caribbean islands which Irma will hit.

I've never seen the projected course of a hurricane go so far inland. That map shows Irma going up to Atlanta!


French St Martin '95% destroyed'

The French part of the Caribbean island St Martin – the northern section of the island that is split with the Netherlands-administered St Maarten – has been “95% destroyed”, Daniel Gibb, a local official, has told Radio Caribbean International:

It’s an enormous catastrophe. Ninety-five percent of the island is destroyed. I’m in shock. It’s frightening.

I have sick people to evacuate, I have a population to evacuate because I don’t know where I can shelter them.

Guadeloupe prefect Eric Maire said at least six people were killed in the French part of St Martin.

The French overseas minister, Annick Girardin, was travelling to Guadeloupe with emergency teams and supplies, Agence France-Presse reported.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, earlier said he expected Irma-related damage to St Martin and another French overseas collectivity, Saint Barthélemy (St Barts) would be “considerable”:

It’s too soon for casualty figures … I can already tell you the toll will be harsh and cruel.

Why There's No Such Thing As a Category 6 Hurricane


Hurricane strength is rated using the Saffir–Simpson scale, first developed in 1971 by Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson, a civil engineer and meteorologist respectively. While flooding can account for must of the lasting damage a hurricane can cause, the Saffir-Simpson scale is concerned solely with windspeed, using the max speed of sustained winds to organize hurricanes into the five established categories:

Category 1: Very dangerous winds will produce some damage. 74-95 mph winds.
Category 2: Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage. 96-110 mph winds.
Category 3: Devastating damage will occur. 111-129 mph winds.
Category 4: Catastrophic damage will occur. 130-156 mph winds.
Category 5: Catastrophic damage will occur on a large scale. 157 mph or higher winds.

The potential for a Category 6 storms seems obvious. Hurricane Irma's 185 mph winds are much higher than a Category 5's lower bound, after all. It's a moot point however, because the Saffir-Simpson scale does not exist to arbitrarily classify storms into tiers based on some sort of abstract power level , or even just based on their windspeed. The Saffir-Simpson scale is designed to reflect the damage a given storm will cause to buildings and other man-made structures in its path. Category 5 is widespread, catastrophic damage. That's not really anything worse than that.

Well yeah, contrary to the TD opinion of the US, new homes have, like, codes shit they are built to. With, like, hurricane ratings & stuff.

Not much is going to stand, stone or otherwise, 185+ MPH winds.

My shop in Florida is rated to 120MPH sustained winds and 140 MPH gusts, so they say, and its steel sheeting.

Definitely not good for Hurricane areas and what hurts most I think is that they hit every 20-25 years in particular areas.

That's a lot of equity and long-term sentimental things to lose.

Houses are already full of mildew in the structure and wooden studs of the houses on Houston. The houses will rot.

I expect a LOT of insurance companies, for those that even have flood insurance, weezling their way out of sufficient payment. Same thing happened after Sandy.

In Florida, it's going to be starting all over again for people, just like Andrew. The insurance never returned after Andrew and now the govt covers it, correct?
