Canadian man charged in Michigan airport stabbing attack; FBI investigating as act of terrorism

A man walked up to a uniformed police officer at the Bishop International Airport in Flint, Mich., and stabbed him in the neck Wednesday morning with a large knife, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.
A law enforcement officer who watched the stabbing and subdued the attacker said that the man — later identified by officials as Amor M. Ftouhi — yelled “Allahu akbar” before stabbing the officer, an FBI special agent said in the affidavit.
Ftouhi then yelled “Allah” several times after stabbing the police officer, the agent said, before saying something about killings in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. When Ftouhi was subdued by the law enforcement officer, he “asked the officer why he did not kill him,” the FBI agent stated.
Officials said Ftouhi is a 50-year-old Canadian who had entered the United States on June 16 in New York, then made his way to Flint.
Officials said the wounded officer is in stable condition and is expected to survive. Police identified him as Lt. Jeff Neville, according to the Associated Press.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday evening that the stabbing was being investigated as an act of terrorism.
“I want to assure all our law enforcement across the nation, any attack on someone who serves and protects our citizens will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Sessions said in a statement. “I am proud of the swift response from the FBI and our federal prosecutors and their partnership with local police and the Canadian authorities. Our prayers are with the officer and his family for a full recovery.”
According to the affidavit, filed with a criminal complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Ftouhi entered the airport’s first level shortly before 9 a.m. carrying two bags. He then went to a restaurant and a bathroom, from which he emerged shortly before 9:40 a.m. without either bag before attacking the officer, the affidavit states.
The complaint charged Ftouhi with violence at an international airport, a federal crime.
