Prince Philip to step down from carrying out royal engagements

    Prince Philip

The Duke of Edinburgh is retiring from royal duties this autumn, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The decision was made by Prince Philip himself and is supported by the Queen, a palace spokesman said.

The duke, who turns 96 next month, will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.
The Queen "will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements", the palace said.

The duke carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016, making him the fifth busiest member of the royal family, according to Court Circular listings.
He is patron, president or a member of more than 780 organisations and will continue to be associated with them, but "will no longer play an active role by attending engagements", Buckingham Palace said.

In the statement, the spokesman said the duke "may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time".

BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said the duke - the longest-serving consort in British history - "clearly feels he now wishes to curtail" his "familiar role" in support of his wife.

He added: "The Queen is going to continue, of that there is no doubt. She will continue, albeit with a somewhat lightened workload."
He stressed there were "no health considerations" behind the move - other than the normal health precautions for a man in his mid-90s.

Prince Philip's gaffes from decades on royal duty

The Duke of Edinburgh's public engagements often produce memorable one-liners that can make some people chuckle and others cringe.
Prince Philip is renowned for speaking his mind - often explained as his attempt to lighten the mood - and that outspoken nature has at times led to controversy with some of those remarks teetering on the edge of being offensive.
Here are some of his most famous quips.

    1966: "British women can't cook".

1969: "What do you gargle with, pebbles?" To Sir Tom Jones after a Royal Variety Performance.

1981: "Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed." During the 1981 recession.

1984: "You are a woman, aren't you?" In Kenya after accepting a small gift from a local woman.

1986: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed." To a group of British students during a royal visit to China.

1988: "It looks like a tart's bedroom." On seeing plans for the Duke and Duchess of York's house at Sunninghill Park.

1992: "Oh no, I might catch some ghastly disease." In Australia when asked to stroke a koala.

1993: "You can't have been here that long, you haven't got a pot belly". To a Briton he met in Hungary.

1994: "Aren't most of you descended from pirates?" To a wealthy islander in the Cayman Islands.

1995: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test." To a Scottish driving instructor.

1996: "If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?" In response to calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shooting.

1997: "Bloody silly fool!" Referring to a Cambridge University car park attendant who did not recognise him.

1999: "Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf." Speaking to a group of young deaf people in Cardiff who were standing near a steel band.
1999: "It looks as if it was put in by an Indian." Referring to an old-fashioned fuse box in a factory near Edinburgh.

2001: "You're too fat to be an astronaut." To 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Prince Philip he wanted to go into space.

2002: "Still throwing spears?" Question put to an Australian Aborigine during a visit.
2002: "You look like a suicide bomber." To a young policewoman wearing a bullet-proof vest on Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

2009: "There's a lot of your family in tonight." After looking at the name badge of businessman Atul Patel at a Palace reception for British Indians.
2009: "Well, you didn't design your beard too well, did you?" To designer Stephen Judge about his tiny goatee beard.

2010: "Do you have a pair of knickers made out of this?" To Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie Pointing while pointing to some tartan in Edinburgh.
2010: "Do you work in a strip club?" To 24-year-old Barnstaple Sea Cadet Elizabeth Rendle when she told him she also worked in a nightclub.

2012: "I would get arrested if I unzipped that dress." To 25-year-old council worker Hannah Jackson, who was wearing a dress with a zip running the length of its front, on a Jubilee visit to Bromley, Kent.

2013: "The Philippines must be half empty as you're all here running the NHS." On meeting a Filipino nurse at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
2013: "[Children] go to school because their parents don't want them in the house." To Malala Yousafzai, who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban and now campaigns for the right of girls to go to school without fear.

2017: "You look starved." To a pensioner on a visit to the Charterhouse almshouse for elderly men.

He was nearly so in 2011, but had a stent op for a blocked coronary artery and seemed to recover pretty well after that.

May he live many more happy years.. I always admired and respected the royal family. They work tirelessly for the good of the people.

Relax Prince Philip, you have earned it...

"When a well-wisher expressed sadness at his decision to "stand down," Philip joked back: "I can't stand up much longer."

He's had a hard life jetting around the globe living a life of the utmost luxury - waving at people, cutting ribbons, unveiling plaques and insulting all and sundry - he's long overdue putting his feet up from that lifetime of hard graft.

Gawd bless him, long live the Queen.

It's a shame this particular family of "parasitical" "drain on resources" aren't treated with the same level of contempt as working class "dole dossers" and "benefit fiddlers" are by our sycophantic, hypocritical media.

This mob are the biggest benefit recipients in the UK - to the tune of hundreds of millions per annum for a single family - yet the same media which demonise those poor people dependent on the welfare state champion these particular parasites without question.

Source: The biggest myth about the Queen? Her contribution to the British economy | The Independent

Figures released by Brand Finance claim the monarchy will deliver a net profit of precisely 1.144 billion pounds to the U.K. economy this year alone. The total economic value of the British monarchy is more than $83 billion, Brand Finance estimates.

The "Firm," as the British royal family is sometimes referred to, helps drive tourism to the United Kingdom, generates surpluses from the Crown Estate, and helps boosts prices for products that carry the much-sought after "royal warrant," Brand Finance says. (The "warrant," by the way, is a seal companies can display on their products if they are among the anointed suppliers to the royal households - think Cadbury chocolate, Jaguars, Burberry, etc. Presumably, a royal warrant lets you charge a premium -- maybe even princely -- price for your products.)

Brand Finance says its final economic impact figures include the deduction of government costs, including security, palace maintenance and the so-called "Sovereign Grant," which this year came in at 37.9 million pounds (or $54.3 million).

"Brand Finance's research shows that from an economic standpoint at least, the royalists firmly have the upper hand. The Queen is exceptionally hard-working and respected; it will be interesting to see whether in due course Charles and William make as effective CEOs as Elizabeth," the company CEO, David Haigh, said in a statement.

And while the royal family is still immensely rich, their financial circumstances have changed somewhat during the past few decades. In 1992, the queen agreed to start paying income taxes; in 1997, the government decommissioned the Royal Yacht Britannia, citing high operating costs; and at times, some members of the royal family have been been known to fly commercial.

The Sovereign Grant helps cover some of the monarchy's costs, including some palace maintenance, salaries and travel. As Sir Alan Reid, Keeper of the Privy Purse, has pointed out, the grant comes out to about 56 pence per person, per year. Brand Finance's math is right, and that is not be a bad return on investment -- whether you're a monarchist or not.

    LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!

Try reading the article. The numbers are basically "made up"'. It's what's colloquially known as bullshit.

Busy Lizzie: In 2015 the Queen, 89, carried out 341 official engagements

As she became Britain's longest reigning monarch in 2015, the Queen, who will be 90 in April, kept more than 340 official engagements.
Last night royal commentator Richard Fitz Williams said: "The figures show her integrity and devotion to duty. She makes herself very visible because of the extraordinary affection people have for her."
On September 9, the Queen surpassed the record held by her great great-grandmother Queen Victoria. She has reigned for almost 64 years.

I'm pretty sure her Majesty does a tad more than waving ... even so, that's a fuck load of waving pal... although, she could probably do with a bath towel to wipe her weary brow.. or commission her as a windmill for her waving efforts.. heh

    LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
