Check that bathtub ... we've lost a nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier!

    .
US backtracks on 'armada' sailing towards North Korea

By the time Pentagon said US was sending an aircraft carrier, vessels were headed in the opposite direction.

    Timeline ...
    • April 8 ... the US Navy on said it was directing a naval strike group headed by the Vinson to "sail north", as a "prudent measure" to deter North Korea.
    • April 11 ... Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said the Vinson was "on her way up" to the peninsula.
    • April 12 ... The next day US President Donald Trump said: "We are sending an armada. Very powerful."
    .
But at the time of the announcements, the ships had headed, half a world away in the opposite direction, to the Indian Ocean for military exercises with Australia.

    ---

    How did we find out?

Well, the real movements came to light after the Navy released a photograph showing the Vinson off Java over the weekend. ...

    ---

    The blame game starts ...
White House officials said on Tuesday that they had been relying on guidance from the defence department.

A defence official told the AFP news agency on Tuesday that the ships were still off the northwest coast of Australia.
    ---

    Informed commentary ...
Lawrence Korb, a former US assistant secretary of defense and a retired Navy captain, said the conflicting messages were "very typical of how the Trump administration does business".

"They send mixed signals all the time," he told Al Jazeera. "They don't have their whole team in place. There is a secretary of defense, but he has no deputies or assistants to work with him.

"You wonder who's in charge, who was following up ... Given the volatility of the situation, this is not a mistake you can afford to make."
    ---

    Shhh - Did anyone notice?

Umm, the South Koreans do seem a tad pissed.
"Trump's lie over the Carl Vinson," read a headline on the website of the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo on Wednesday. "Xi Jinping and Putin must have had a good jeer over this one."

"Like North Korea, which is often accused of displaying fake missiles during military parades, is the United States, too, now employing 'bluffing' as its North Korea policy?" the article asked.

The episode raised questions about whether major allies of the United States, like South Korea and Japan, had been informed of the carrier's whereabouts, and whether the misinformation undercut US strategy to contain North Korea's nuclear ambitions by using empty threats.
    ---

But the White House will fess up to it's Mistake ... won't it? ...
    Spicer stumbles Vinson carrier explanation
When asked to clarify President Trump's statements last week about sending an "armada" as a warning to North Korea even though the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group was heading in the opposite direction, White House Spokesman Sean Spicer said, "the President said that we have an armada going towards the peninsula, that is a fact, it happened, it is happening rather.

    What a fustercluck...

This answers the question I asked Storekeeper on the USS Trump thread:

Those same officials did not push back on reports that the Vinson would return to Korean waters, where the strike group operated for much of March as part of the annual U.S.-Korean Foal Eagle exercises. While declining to confirm a specific date, they did not dispute speculative media reports from South Korea that the strike group could be in the region by April 25 or so.

Officials did, however, flatly deny reports that three U.S. carrier strike groups were being directed to mass off the Korean peninsula in a few weeks.

Speculation has been rising that the Ronald Reagan and Nimitz strike groups could join with the Vinson. The Japan-based carrier Reagan, however, is in a maintenance period at Yokosuka scheduled to complete in May. The Bremerton, Washington-based Nimitz and her strike group is off Southern California, nearing the completion of its major pre-deployment exercise. The ship is scheduled to deploy this spring to relieve the Vinson in the Western Pacific.

Signals based on ignorance of what is going on in his own administration. Zero fact checking before some stupid tweet.

In this case every crew member on the task force knew where they were going. Jesus h christ. What a joke this administration is. One big cluster fuck put in place and run by a leader who just doesn't have a clue.

Yes mate, put the story together from 3 articles with the commentary.

The timeline took a little sorting out, but needed to be done.

BTW, I'm not 'anti-Trump' ... he's even surprised me a little on the positive with his presidency thus far. Admittedly from a very low expectation baseline.

But he's/his staff have f*cked this up big time and they will only complicate it but trying to spin it.

His street cred has just fallen with this incident and his his ability to Bluff the Deal has diminished.

What news has been fabricated. You don't think an administration has an obligation to speak the truth? And fact checking them is an example of fabricated news?

It only takes a few stealth submarines with nuclear missile launch capabilities to level that part of the Peninsula that is militarized.
Let's do the minimum math...three subs with 8 launch silos equals...

Sadly in an insane world a little bit of insanity might do the job (as fooked as that sounds).

What's Britain going to send , eel pies to feed the survivors ?
(Only kidding tossers. Let's hope someone wakes up Kim before it's too late.)

Most importantly...the fission material must be dealt with one way or the other. As Kim has upped his game of poker it's time to call his bluff - not deal him another hand.

Relax Britain has 4 subs. Where each one is ? Well?
Each one has 16 missile tubes but they only load 8 nukes.

The scariest part of this thing is "The whole world believed it" and put up an old picture of an aircraft carrier sailing to somewhere . Even the Russians and Chinese believed it.
How can you just hide an aircraft carrier and no one seems to really know where the hell it is ?

And Everyone is joining in on the fun

In what appears to be both a coordinated move and a warning to Washington China and Russia send spy ships to track Carl Vinson.

As the US aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and its accompanying escort ships come within striking distance of North Korea, a Japanese newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun, is reporting that Russia and China have sent spy ships to monitor their movements.
Yomiuri Shimbun says it has been provided with this information by “numerous sources within the Japanese government”. The Japanese government would be well-informed about this situation because some of its own warships have joined the task force led by Carl Vinson.
    What to believe ?
Looks like they all got invited to a party but forgot to hand out the address.

Good point Herman, although I'm sure the Russians would have known exactly where the ship was.

The other day I read an article that stated both Russian and Chinese navies were keeping surveilance on this American 'carrier-based' fleet. Go figure.

Possibly they notified the White House.

I don't think it was "Hidden". They left San Diego and the buzz was that they were going to Korea. Only a few days later when they turned left to go to the Indian Ocean did it become clear where their actual destination was.

    Fake news again.

White House fibs, what a surprise.

I remember them telling the world the Vincennes was busy streaming its way home after shooting down an Iranian airliner, when the fucking thing was parked on a quay outside my office.
