1,500 acid attacks have been recorded in London since 2011

Acid attacks in Britain's capital are soaring to new heights, new data reveals.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by the Mirror shows that between 2011 and 2016, London had nearly 1,500 cases of the devastating crime, which burns the skin and leaves victims cowering from their injuries.

Trending: 1,500 acid attacks have been recorded in London since 2011

In the long term, the scale of the injuries are so scarring that victims can often suffer serious psychological damage as a result of the attacks.

Last year alone, there were 431 such acid attacks – a rise of 170 cases from the year prior.

The figures match a general UK trend, in which the crime rate for such attacks has risen by 50% since 2005.

Globally, roughly 80% of victims tend to women. Attacks are often carried out by vengeful men who have had their marriage proposals or sexual advances rebuffed.

However, acid attack charities in the UK estimate that British victims are predominantly men, at roughly 71% of victims.

Jaf Shah, the executive director of the support group Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), told the Guardian: "Looking at the data in general, there is a fairly large probability that a high percentage of the incidents are male-on-male attacks and most likely to be gang-related.

"The numbers appear to be very high and suggest an increase, which is very concerning."

A former gang member described how acid attacks had become more acceptable and were not seen as a "big deal".

"People don't think of the consequences," he said. "It's easy to buy most of the ingredients legally…One of my cousins was done a few years ago. He was attacked on his shoulder and my uncle just dressed it for him at home.

"Acid is used as an extreme mark of dominance. It's letting the individual know I haven't killed you, but it's almost worse than that, it's a mark – on your face. It's a sinister legacy."

The difficulty and emotional trauma in reporting acid attacks can also mean that the figures are severely underinflated.

Newham, in east London, had the highest instances of acid attacks with 398 in the last six years.

One of the most sickening and vile crimes imaginable and should carry a mandatory life sentence without chance of parole.

Did they ever burn out that Iranian guy's eyes after he blinded his ex a few years ago?

Was a big media thing about it and their eye for an eye law.

He was sentenced to be tied down and acid drops dripped into his eyes.

Another culturally fostered problem, reading the stats.

With more males than females in Newham, 71% of the victims are Asian males. Newham (the highest recorded number of cases) is nearly 45% Asian, whites make up around 27% of the population.

Vengance is a powerful emotion but it's their fukt up State pandering to mob emotion which fuels these kind of attacks, if the State does it as just punishment it can't be wrong, can it? And then this export this psychotic behaviour to other part of the world they infest.

When I was a kid in the hills of India, annually, ritual human sacrifices were fostered and performed by certain clans, upon others, to increase their power.

On the plains below, acid attacks were almost a tradition, let alone the rest of the butchery only village Indians or the mobs of Delhi are capable of, all on a perceived threat of slur or dishonour, even of a defeat in any deal.

Murder was, and still is, a norm in some parts there when conflicts weren't resolved, often.

Tribalism, clan versus clan, family against family, son against son.

    As the article says,

"Acid is used as an extreme mark of dominance. It's letting the individual know I haven't killed you, but it's almost worse than that, it's a mark – on your face. It's a sinister legacy."

I don't disagree with that but vitriolage is a crime that's been specifically associated with Londoners since the early 19th Century.

The industrial revolution made sulphuric and nitric acid cheaply and readily available to anybody who wanted it. You'd probably find the same in other British urban centres of the time but the population of London was disproportionately large compared to other cities.

Guns were too difficult and expensive for most people to acquire and knife attacks, I guess, too physically dangerous for most assailants. Looking at the press at the time, Illustrated London News, Police Gazette, it seems to have been relatively common at one time.

    That explains something.

Something else that might have a strong bearing on the high incidence in London is that most of the attacks occur where there is a high gender difference.

Newham is such an area, with around 6% more males than females, so relationships can become volatile.

It's especially true in South Asia where the majority of vitriolage incidents are recorded, it seems.
