Commonwealth Games - Bye Bye Africa

Commonwealth Games: Durban stripped of right to hold 2022 Games over financial problems

Durban was stripped of the right to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday after a trail of missed deadlines and financial problems that highlights the daunting burdens facing host cities for major sporting events.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said the South African coastal city had failed to meet the promises contained in its bid, and the search for a replacement host was now on.

Birmingham and Liverpool express interest to host

The English cities of Birmingham and Liverpool have repeated their interest in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games after the announcement of the decision to take it away from Durban.

I fear you are right Neal. Every indicator points to that. Socially and financially. Governmental incompetence and corruption are bywords for most of Africa.

The commonwealth games operates at a loss.
Being host to the commonwealth games is a poisoned chalice not dissimilar to the Eurovision song content that Ireland discovered to it's financial discomfort.

I remember the Edinburgh Council nearly bankrupted itself holding the 1986 games. The Scottish Comonwealth Games Commitee totally miscalculated the cost and the council had to plough cash they didnt have into the whole sorry circus. They were bailed out by that old crook Robert Maxwell

Durban would not have been the sort of destination African competitors aspire to go to, as most African athletes aspirations are to go to the games to claim asylum in the host country, or disappear.
You see it's not easy to get a visa to travel to rich countries, but being an athlete helps secure a must have visa.
Queensland sounds like a Gold Coast athletes ( Ghanaian). prime destination

All these competitions should have like a single continental venue that all countries pay into to fund, rather than building ever bigger fandangoes.
It's only the larger countries that can ever host them anyway. I reckon Greece was the smallest country to host an olympics and it didn't them much good... but frankly, it would be more sensible for the Olympics to always be held in Greece at a purpose-built internationally-funded venue (like some extraterratorial space like the UN or Vatican) where the conditions were consistent, and there was less of the gravy train. The Commonwealths could be held only in the UK. You could have a Pan-african games always held where Kilimanjaro is; a Pan-american games in Mexico; a Pan-Oceanian games in OZ; a Pan-Asian games might be a bit tricker though... but all this rigmarole of choosing a new country is not working.

I've no doubt the Gold Coast will make a success of the games as it's already got the infrastructure and is a major tourist resort.
