It's interesting to see the speed (and time barrers) move up. I think it would be too expensive to be feasible for passengers but we're heading in that direction of faster travel in the future (perhaps).

A SUPERSONIC jet capable of flying passengers across the Atlantic ocean in just three hours could change air travel forever.

NASA has wind tunnel tested the futuristic aircraft dubbed “the new Concorde”.

The revolutionary Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST) project is aiming to create a jet that can break the 767mph sound barrier.

Space boffins from the US space agency have joined forces with Lockheed Martin to work on the ambitious project.

Engineer Charles Bolden hopes the jets will one day ferry passengers across the Atlantic in half the time of a conventional aircraft.

Currently it takes a commercial airliner around eight hours to fly from the US to the UK.

From London to New York, a Concorde's average flight time is around 3 hours 30 minutes.

Bolden said: “NASA is working hard to make flight greener, safer and quieter – all while developing aircraft that travel faster, and building an aviation system that operates more efficiently.

“To that end, it’s worth noting that it's been almost 70 years since Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 as part of our predecessor agency's high speed research.

"Now we’re continuing that supersonic X-plane legacy with this preliminary design award for a quieter supersonic jet with an aim toward passenger flight."

Government agency supporting a commercial aviation venture. Airbus get pilloried if they do that but Lockheed Martin? Apparently not?

The Concorde was incredibly safe for the pioneering technology it was. It took a metal piece falling off a crappy DC-10 to bring down the only one that crashed. Amazing achievement by the British and French.

I had a search through the link but didn't find an answer ...

The X43A test vehicle was 'launched' from a booster rocket, which was launched from a B-52 so the tests were refining known theory.

The problem is that a ramjet/scramjet needs significant forward velocity to operate. That means using turbojets to get up in the air and climb to the velocity required to start the ramjet. The scramjet is dead weight during this phase and the turbojet is dead weight during the hypersonic phase. A compromise is required to fulfil all stages of flight. I can't see a solid fuel rocket engine being used to accelerate to required speed due to noise and safety and god knows how many other issues...

I hope they come up with something. Flying from DC to BKK is really getting boring.

It was suffering from other nonfatal mechanical fails and the public was losing faith to the extent that I believe the Concorde consortium was nearly in the red, if not already there. The crash was the last nail in the coffin.

Xanax is cheaper than flying business class and cheaper than a supersonic flight would be. I could not survive the flight to Los Angeles without something to knock me out.

My grandad, dad, and I used to go there.

^^ Even business is brutal, just less brutal.

Hi there Annapolis is basically the same. In town the only constant change are the businesses. There always seems to be someone new to move in. Middleton's is still going strong it's mainly a tourist spot though the foods marginal.
