His cause of death is not yet know.

Churkin served as Russia's ambassador to the United Nations since 2006 and was the longest-serving member of the Security Council.

A spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry said Churkin was an "extraordinary person.

"Devastated by passing of Russian UN Amb Vitaly Churkin," she tweeted.

    this is interesting....

Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, died in New York City on Monday at 64, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement Monday.

"A prominent Russian diplomat has passed away while at work. We'd like to express our sincere condolences to Vitaly Churkin's family," the ministry said in the statement.

Vladimir Safronkov, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador, told The Associated Press that Churkin became ill in his office Monday and was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he passed away. The foreign ministry's official Facebook account said in a post that Churkin "died in harness" a day ahead of this 65th birthday.

They provided no further details of the circumstances surrounding his death. A cause of death was not immediately identified at the hospital.

It has been a rough time for Russian ambassadors. This is the fourth death in three months.

Is there any common denominator other than the obvious?

The Russians will not panic as they have lots of ambassadors who are still alive. It's a pity that this one died as he had lots of hair and looked respectable.

^ not one for conspiracy theories, but that's the first thing that crossed my mind when i saw the headline this afternoon....and IMO that's not beyond the realm of possibility.

it will be interesting to see if any other pieces leave the board in the next few months.
