British PM: Days of US, Britain Remaking Sovereign Nations in Their Image Are Over

British Prime Minister Theresa May says the days of the U.S. and Britain intervening in other nations to remake them in their image are over.

The prime minster spoke to a gathering of U.S. Republican leaders Thursday in Philadelphia, before meeting there with President Donald Trump.

May said it is in British and American interests to defend their values, but not go back to what she called the "failed policies of the past."

"But nor can we afford to stand idly by when the threat is real and when it is in our own interests to intervene. We must be strong, smart and hard-headed."

May also called for reform in such multinational institutions as the U.N. and NATO "to make them more relevant and purposeful." She said their members have to stop leaning on the United States.

"Sovereign countries cannot outsource their security and prosperity to America. And they should not undermine the alliances that keep us strong by failing to step up and play their part."

May said a Trump presidency can make the U.S. "stronger, greater and more confident," which she said is good for the rest of the world. She said British and American conservatives share the same principles.

Trump was greeted by a number of protesters when he arrived in Philadelphia. He later told fellow Republicans it was "nice to win" the state of Pennsylvania in the November election, which has traditionally gone to the Democrats.

He went on to reference a number of his most prominent policy aspirations, including his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border, and investigating alleged voter fraud in the 2016 election.

"We are going to protect the integrity of the ballot box and we are going to defend the votes of the American citizen. So important," he said.

The congressional Republicans are meeting for a three-day retreat, at which they will plan their legislative agenda for the coming years when they will control both houses of Congress and the White House.

    White House visit

May is scheduled to visit the White House on Friday. She will meet with Trump and the two will give a joint news conference, the White House said.

She will be the first foreign leader to meet with Trump in Washington since he took office.

Both leaders have taken steps to reform their international relations, particularly through trade. Britain's pending exit from the European Union and Trump's withdrawal from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership will necessitate negotiating new trade agreements throughout the world.

May's plan for the E.U. exit includes placing a priority on controlling immigration, although she has not yet announced any policy details.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump hasn't yet decided whether he will cut funding to international organizations, like the United Nations, after media reports suggested the president was looking to reduce the role of the U.S. within those organizations.

That's good to hear. It's early, but this is worth noting below.

What is it about English prime ministers and their bizarre infatuations with America and its presidents?
America is a fuck up in so many ways, there is no special relationship or bond that ties the two countries other than greed, the cultures are quite different and the peoples are rightly regarded as separated by a common language, yet as soon as they are elected the British PM can't wait to fly over to the Oval Office, get down on their knees, unzip that fly and start sucking on that dick.

May really has swallowed all that bollocks .........quite literally.

...Britain intervening in other nations to remake them in their image are over.
and what image might that be?
divide and rule retarded immigration policy,
over run with pedos and homosexuals,
    overcrowded everything,
red tape and indecision stopping any infrastructure development,
economy based on consumer spending and housing bubble,
a hatred of the working class,
    propped up banks,
all the big towns and cities swarming with toffs or chavs and not much else,

I guess if you wanted to destroy your enemy then the above would be better than bombs.
Perhaps someone is already attacking UK that way ...

This is fantastic to hear, I hope it is borne out over the next 8 years. There is a profound ideological difference between Trump and the so called danger of nationalism. Trump believes a country is defined by its borders and the citizens of that country come first.

Neoliberals and neoconservatives believe that western nations are concepts that transcend borders and can thus be exported all over the world, and it also means that there are no borders to defend, only ideas.

It justifies all kinds of intervention and simultaneously opens up all western nations to any kind of immigration.

They are out of control lunatics, the damage they have wrought and the millions of lives they have destroyed with their ill thought schemes are unimaginable; Trump was sorely needed to redress the balance.

    Err, you are clearly unwell.
America is a mongrel nation reliant on migration in order to sustain its wealth. The Donald Pig hates blacks, spics, greasers, muslims and most coons. He likes Jews, white christian people and money. He lies and cheats. He cannot bear the truth when it reflects badly on his stupidity, his ignorance, his racism, his bigotry and his prejudices. White people are the minority in the US. The Donald Pig is only too aware of this but also knows that the white redneck moron american element are sooo stupid they will believe any shit he cares to spread about anyone who isn't on his Xmas card list of favoured groups and he can rely on them as his bedrock support.

Fuck him, fuck Americans, and, certainly, fuck you.

Europe is the centre of the universe and the cradle of all civilisation. The rest of the world is just a motorway service station on the road to hell and you a mere grease spot.

It seems to have slipped Mrs May' mind that the days of Empire were over decades ago.
Superseded by the commonwealth with some successes Aus, Can and NZ, and some abject failures, S Africa, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka it behooves all of us to remember, we gave them steam railways, cricket and missionaries in return for vast riches plundered over centuries, and they leave a legacy of highly trained and dedicated staff to run our NHS.
The US left the commonwealth before the Empire was established, which is why Americans will now pretend to be Canadian when they travel abroad, just like they did when GW Bush was in the chair.

Maybe it has something to do with the U.S. coming to the aid of Britain during WWII. The British didn't seem to hate us so much back then.

I am sitting very comfortably in My lovely fair Island home and feeling rather like a Thai feels about Thailand.
Proud of the brave English folk who voted for Leaving the EU and it's their revolution that has created this great new political stage on top of the world.
What makes Me the proudest is the knowledge that for many Europeans living in Europe, we the British have given you hope and inspiration that there is a new way forward.

I'm thinking of the way that by holding out against the kraut we were preserving America's interests which saw Britain bankrupted and losing its traditional empire markets which America gleefully and wantonly exploited.
America had even excluded Britain from the Marshall Plan aid package and it wasn't until Truman was told that communism might fill the vacuum caused by extreme poverty and rationing did the septics finally relent.
Special relationship, my arse. America fucked us but in truth it was the Russians that destroyed Germany.

America's value is its role in taking migrants suffering from persecution from around the world and using them to create wealth. Trump is just an arsehole and too stupid to understand it, as indeed are his lumpen, redneck fuckwitted supporters.
May is a dullard old biddy who is sucking any cock if it means the boneheaded, achingly stupid, Brexshitter crew can do a deal replacing the billions it is going to cost Britain and the destruction of the Union.

It's going to fail, spectacularly. The seismic change in car production, the shift in the banking axis and the return of corporate America back to the shores of Uncle Sam, the contraction of the Chinese economy, the rapid and exponential increase in automation and the loss of unfettered access to the EU markets will ensure that.
2019/20 will be the year the UK ceases to exist and begins its new iteration of Engerlandia, a protectorate of the US and just another US$ state.

I agree he won't last the full term. He's soon to be 71, why would he want this job for 4 years? And not only cuz he's old. Consider the sweet private life he was living, where, among other things, he was not working hard nor accountable every day. He'll get some wild stuff going, then step aside or be impeached (as long as he does not end up in jail, he's a billionaire, he won't care), and let his hand-picked cronies carry on. A lot of whom don't think the same as the D, which will mean more of a sense of calm.

The wild stuff will get curtailed, eg. they'll build 50 miles of wall with Mexico (not a bad thing, because of drug trade mostly), renegotiate some nafta details, declare it all a success with some made-up stats, and stop. They'll modify aspects of Obamacare that need fixing, not scrap it entirely.

It has to be said, every first world country needs to recognize the new reality that immigration needs to be run with the security of the existing citizens (and legal residents) of the country being Number 1. If Trump - despite being an offensive nutjob - moves the needle on this for America, it will be a good thing.

U'mmm, are you talking about the union of European or American states? I sure know where I would prefer to live.
Anyway, wise words and true spoken by Theresa May- but who will listen? 'Nation building' has been an abject catastrophe.
