Mexico Extradites Top Drug Lord 'El Chapo' to US

    CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO —
Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been extradited from a prison in northern Mexico to the United States, the Mexican
government said on Thursday, one day before Donald Trump assumes the U.S. presidency.

Guzman was one of the world's most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January 2016. Six months earlier, he had broken out of a high-security penitentiary in central Mexico through a mile-long tunnel.

"The government ... today handed Mr Guzman Loera to the U.S. authorities," the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to a court decision on Thursday rejecting a legal challenge by his lawyers against extradition.

Guzman was being held in a prison in the infamously violent border city of Juarez in the northern state of Chihuahua where his Sinaloa cartel won a bloody drug war against rivals.

His lawyers had sought to block his extradition to the United States.

"It's a good thing to finally get him to the U.S. side," said a senior U.S. law enforcement official based

Addios Amigo, the World won't be hearing much from you any longer. Try buying your way out of an American Federal prison.

Remember seeing the tunnel. Must have had a full team of engineers and mining personnel working on it.

How much will it cost to keep him locked up? Half a million a year at least? And how many millions to prosecute him in all the jurisdictions? Meanwhile, there are just as many illegal drugs around as ever. Sean Penn has a point - the War on Drugs is a failure.

Mexico's 'El Chapo' Pleads Not Guilty to Drug Charges in NYC

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has pleaded not guilty to charges of running a massive drug-trafficking operation in North America and overseeing killings and kidnappings.

Through his court-appointed lawyers, Guzman entered a not-guilty plea Friday in a New York City federal court. No bail was sought.

Guzman answered questions through an interpreter standing next to him.

Guzman arrived in New York from Mexico late Thursday following his surprise extradition. He was arraigned in a 17-count indictment that carries a mandatory life prison term upon conviction of running a criminal enterprise, and additional maximum sentences of life in prison stemming from other drug charges, according to Robert Capers, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

"Today marks a milestone in our pursuit of Chapo Guzman," Capers told reporters Friday.

Prosecutors say Guzman's Sinoloa cartel operated for decades in much of North America and reaped billions of dollars by dispersing cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine throughout the United States.

Guzman is accused of money laundering and drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder in cities throughout the United States, including Chicago, Miami and New York.

The convicted cartel boss has spent the past year fighting extradition. He has twice escaped from maximum-security prisons in Mexico. Guzman last escaped from Altiplano prison in 2015 after maneuvering through a kilometer-long tunnel that had been dug by his associates. He was recaptured a year ago.

U.S. prosecutors agreed to not seek the death penalty as a condition of the extradition of Guzman.

Guzman's attorney said his extradition was politically motivated.

Capers said the U.S. government was also seeking a $14 billion forfeiture order as part of its prosecution.

He will be spending the rest of his miserable life in a supermax correctional system getting "Marionised" and I should imagine his brain will probably turn to mush in a decade or so.

Must be a trifle odd to have been so critical for so many years to so many people's lives, and rich beyond calculation, to end up alone in a concrete box without the opportunity to touch a human being ever again, knowing every second of your day is spent scrutinised and controlled to the nth degree.

His only release will be insanity.

    1) He's escaped before a couple times. And there are lots of Latinos as well as entrenched crime organizations in New York, making it a curious choice of destination for him.

    2) New York is also where The Donald and his wife/son live. He escapes and pays a visit?

    Good humor, UM.

He'll be in isolation for at at least a while I assume.

It'll be airtight security with many layers.

I've not read up much on chubby chapo. I'll look for a youtube doc now (in espanol).
