I would say the reality is that almost none of them are. Only a tiny minority would even be politically inclined to betray their country. Of that minority only a tiny fraction would actually act on their disgruntled political leanings. And of that tiny fraction of true traitors only one or two get the opportunity to act on their leanings.

These clowns like Manning and Snowden are not motivated by their conscience; they are motivated by their egos. That is why they disclose far more information than they need to when they decide to sell their country out.

The description of the supposed damage caused by the actions of Manning and Snowden remains lacking.

If its so big and obvious, should it not be easy to describe? Should examples not be easily and readily available?

It smells completely of, those doing the actions described in the documents, don't like their questionable actions being revealed - and nothing else.

Bradley Manning's sentence has been commuted. There is NO pardon.
I spent over 20 years in the military, and a large portion of that was spent in intelligence, both directly and indirectly, around the world.
Bradley Manning joined the US Army with the sole intent to benefit from the GI Bill and its education provisions. He/she had significant psychological issues before enlistment, and it beggars belief that the US Army accepted this individual, let alone put him (at the time) in an intelligence role. They have themselves to blame.
"National security" is a nebulous term, openly susceptible to hubris and hyperbole. I suspect any damage was minor, and for a limited time. Most intelligence tends to have a short shelf life.

    Obama explains:

    By Michael Walsh

At his final press conference as president of the United States, Barack Obama defended his controversial decision this week to commute convicted leaker Chelsea Manning’s sentence.

Obama was asked if he feared that commuting her sentence might send a message that leaking classified information might send the wrong message to groups like WikiLeaks. The Obama administration has accused Russian hackers of sharing information with WikiLeaks to interfere in the U.S. election.

But Obama maintained that Manning, who was convicted in 2013 of sharing classified material with WikiLeaks, had paid a serious price for her crimes.

“First of all, let’s be clear, Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence. So the notion that the average person who was thinking about disclosing vital classified information would think that it goes unpunished, I don’t think would get that impression from the sentence that Chelsea Manning has served,” he said.

Obama proceeded to explain his perspective on the polarizing case of the former U.S. soldier.

“Given that she went to trial, that due process was carried out, that she took responsibility for her crime, that the sentence that she received was very disproportionate relative to what other leakers had received, and that she had served a considerable amount of time, that it made sense to commute — and not pardon — her sentence,” he continued...

Altough no one was killed, publishing a list of informants in Afganistan certianly put their lives at risk.
Publishing a video showing US military knowingly killing civilians would not.

Both Manning and Snowden were convicted of violating the 1917 Espionage Act. The act that is used anytime information is published by folks working in or for the US government and have taken an oath of non disclosure. In this regard there is no wistle blower protection. The prescribed process is to reporting what one believes is an illegal action through the chain of command. Generally a waste of time with the risk of reprisal.

Bottom line, publicizing anything, no matter how illegal, will result in jail time. Needs to be some sort of process where military folks can disclose illegal actions with no reprisals and assurance the allegation is investigated.
    Thank you for this, Norton.

^Point being he didn't apply because he doesn't need it. He is serving a meaningless two-year probation period for a misdemeanor conviction. The two-years is over in a few months. The probation has not limited him in any way.

So could the Trumpmeister general in theory reverse this commutation of sentence nest week if it was deemed by his administration not to be in the best interests of holistic justice (including setting appropriate exemplary sentences to discourage copycat leakers) or not?
