Street brawl involving up to 100 people breaks out in Woking, Surrey

Four people arrested after coins were thrown at officers attempting to break up huge fight in early hours of Christmas Day

Four people have been arrested in Woking, Surrey, after a fight broke out in the early hours of Christmas Day involving as many as 100 people.

Coins were thrown at officers and a number of taxi drivers were reported to have been intimidated during the trouble, which lasted around an hour, Surrey police said.

Police and dog units were sent to the scene in Chertsey Road after being called at around 3am, and four people were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

Supt Clinton Blackburn said: “Christmas Eve is a popular night for people to go out and socialise and the majority of party-goers have a good time and enjoy themselves.

“However, festivities soured during this unpleasant event, which involved a large group of people fighting in the street.

“A number of officers and dog units were deployed to the scene in order to disperse the group from Woking town centre with the support of the NPAS [National Police Air Service] helicopter.

“Officers quickly took a grip of the situation and worked hard to bring it under control effectively and safely, under challenging circumstances, which included having coins thrown at them, and by 4am the area had returned to normal.”

Police have appealed for anyone who may have filmed the fight on their phone to contact them and for witnesses to come forward.

Unusual way to celebrate the coming of the Messiah, but they did uphold the traditional giving of gifts by throwing money at the cops.....

Fairly typical Saturday night in many English towns. The question should be, "why is this news?"

Because nothing else was going on, The night before Xmas most people now stay at home , the ones that go out aren't the best of society hence its now a quiet night left to a few morons.

Correct. Normal, nice people are at home cooking, wrapping pressies, or relaxing before the big family day.

Midnight mass is a thing of the past in many parishes - too many drunks showing up.

My parents used to go years ago, I think my mum has been twice since he died. She said it was fun, like a sing a long, with mince pies and wine.

In Edinburgh they have security guards in front of the main Churches now.

^^Do they not do it any more? That is a shame. Haven't been to midnight mass for maybe 20 years. Wouldn't mind going again just for the carol singing. Wish they would do it a bit earlier. Maybe a 9pm start would be good. Better to get it all done and dusted before the pubs close.

You don't need to go out to midnight mass like we used to, you can watch it on Tele , loads of Christian channels next to the shopping channels, attend it by sitting at home on the sofa pissed .

^yes but you can only smell the incense if you go the church. I used to be the altar boy that did the smoke bomb on the chain (or thurible as it was known to the altar boy team in the sacristy). I got to wear a little red dress in public.

^I had the Classic FM chrismas carols sung by the Choir of Kings College on the Bluetooth soundbar on crimbo eve. I might crank up the incense sticks next year but I don't think I will still be able to squeeze into that little red dress.

Yes, extremely challenging, glad the assaulted coppers survived and got home safely to their loved ones.

Was there nothing else to report, no sinister looking swarthy types with backpacks spotted near Christian Churches? Where is the gutter press when you need it to lighten up a dreary post-xmas period?

This story was important only in as much as it illustrates how Woking became one of the great spiritual centers of England. You can feel the pulse of the nation after a good street fight in places like Woking....and it's quite likely that this little incident could become as much of a Christmas tradition as lighted trees, Turkey, pudding and whatnot....
