Carrier says it has struck a deal with Trump to keep nearly 1,000 jobs in Indiana

President-elect Donald Trump and Carrier have reached a deal that will keep nearly 1,000 factory jobs in Indiana, the company said on Tuesday.

Carrier poses an early critical test for Trump, who promised during the campaign to keep American jobs from fleeing to Mexico.

Trump and Mike Pence, the vice president-elect and current governor of Indiana, will be in Indiana on Thursday to announce the deal, Carrier said.

The company, which is owned by defense contractor United Technologies, announced in February that it would close two Indiana plants -- a Carrier plant in Indianapolis that employs 1,400 workers and a United Technologies Electronic Controls plant in nearby Huntington, Indiana, that employs 700.

Carrier did not elaborate on the terms of the deal, but it is on the record, as are most other major multinational businesses, as wanting to see a cut in corporate tax rates, especially as it applies to cash earned overseas.

Originally, they were going to move 2000 jobs. Now they've got a massive tax break and they're still going to move over 1000 jobs. And it's state tax breaks in Indiana, so Pence could have done this at any time.

Carrier says it has struck a deal with Trump to keep jobs in Indiana - Nov. 29, 2016

"'New inducements'" = Subsidies," Lincicome wrote, adding "CONGRATULATIONS INDIANA TAXPAYERS! YOU INVOLUNTARILY BOUGHT AN INEFFICIENT AC FACTORY."
Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics at the University of Michigan, commented that the deal could set a troubling precedent.

"Every savvy CEO will now threaten to ship jobs to Mexico, and demand a payment to stay," Wolfers wrote on Twitter, adding "great economic policy."

Tax break or not the workers will still be in Indiana, still earning incomes, still paying taxes. Some taxes are better then 0 taxes don't u think.

No they don't think so. Their policy of globalization has taken a first hit and they don't like it! Millions more jobs must be wrenched out of America and sent overseas to equalize incomes globaly, global social welfare!!!!!!!! Trump must be stopped or he will put the breaks to ....... I'm for trump, I don't like his oafish way of running for president, but do I think hes an oaf? Nope hes a smart cookie. Stay tuned for more smart cookie moves and more left wing anguish and wringing of hands.

The media can't get enough of Trump news, he should be charging royalties for every time he says something.

First of all, looking at this at the micro level, the devil is in the details. How much of a break, for what benefits and ongoing taxes? The deal might make sense, or it might not. "1000 jobs saved" is not the only criteria.

The workers at the Indiana Carrier plant earn an average of $23/hour + benefits (typically bens amount to at least 25% or more of the basic wage), due to their union. All the squawking about the loss of well-paying jobs, screams that its a given these workers are overpaid. Otherwise, they'd just walk down the street with their talent and get another similar-paying job, wouldn't they?

The world does change. Many a manufacturing job has left America (and within America, away from places like Michigan, leading to Detroit being what it is) because workers were unwilling to get their minds around concepts like, earning 75% of the former salary, is better than 100% of no salary (or some minimum wage basic laborer gig). Reality, if a $6/hour Mexican laborer can do it just as well as you (or at least 90% as well as you), you are not that talented.

And at the Macro level, the point about corporate welfare is valid. Corporations are pigs, they will eat as much as they can. Give them a trough of slop, they'll eat. If they squeal a certain way, and a trough of slop appears, they'll perfect the squeal.

Err, this sounds pretty much like a "left wing" policy - basically a subsidy. It would be decried by Republicans if it happened overseas.
Thin end of a rather large wedge ...

What's the betting Carrier are guaranteed some nice contracts in Indiana, which the poor taxpayer will end up funding to keep 1,000 low paid labourers in a job.

And since most of those taxpayers are Trump supporters and oppose welfare....

And some lovely corporate tax breaks for Carrier, possibly federal as well as state.

And guess how many Trump supporters will be paying for those?

    Fucking idiots.

It just means less tax money for the govt, not the govt giving them money, taxes will still be paid, the govt will still get some just less. That is not negative as the leftards here are trying to imply to trick the slow witted once again. The left holds the common man in contempt, all they think of you is someone to be tricked duped and led about bye the nose. Keeping carrier in Indiana is a win, yes as a whole they will be paying less in taxes but still paying. The jobs will still be here and the workers will still pay taxes, its a win. All the leftidiots are trying to do is spin, you cant trust them. Didn't the left media prove that during the election endlessly with their openly twisted lying stories.

Does this mean Trump is going to start buying his steel/clothes/tablecloths/curtains/furniture from the US instead of overseas?

First, 1000 staying is better than 2000 leaving.
Second could you post a link to the "massive" tax breaks from Indiana.
Third if Trump tripled the employment, ended the wars in the Middle East, and payed off the national debt you still would not give him credit so your posts are equivalent to posting a rainy tale.

Good to see you back Terry.

Trump has already done more for the people than any other president elect in past history IMO. For all you Dems out there, read it and weep. He will continue to make better business deals than we ever had in the past. Let's see what he does with immigration and foreign affairs.
